I can confirm both successfully build using Raspberry Pi 3, most of the example
programs work very well, however, some examples do have a few issues
but it's certainly possible to create a decent game using those engines.

You could try Irrlicht and Urho3D

Both work well on the Raspberry Pi 3.

Are you specifically looking at Quake 1?
