if you just want to test values interactively to see what works properly, you can use https://github.com/alanbork/kmsmodeline.
This works for KMS too? Seems to be FKMS?
works with kms and fkms.

Re: "Right to Repair Legislation and the Raspberry Pi"

ive heard that some modern laptops are now using eDP (embedded display port) for the internal displays in theory, that now allows you to connect any eDP, or even full DP (with an adapter) to your laptop so the problem is just one of making the screen actually fit and mount properly That's great! I'...

Re: "Right to Repair Legislation and the Raspberry Pi"

Yes, encouragement to use of generic connectors and protocols would be great - call it right to reparability ;-) My 2016 civic has a LCD that looks for the life of it like a cheap android tablet, but I'm sure the official replacement is $1000. And in 10 years even that might not be an option. Maybe ...

Re: isolating project-depent changes into a single folder

That sounds reasonable for professional or paid projects, but we are talking about small scale hobby work where the final installation form factor is an SD image. What you describe sounds like a lot of overhead if I'm the only user.

Re: "Right to Repair Legislation and the Raspberry Pi"

I was never into soldering until I could mate it with cheap full-stack-software-stack devices like the pi. You don't have to do it all with circuit design, what's best done in software can be software. But knowing how to solder really increases the range of what you can do with that software. It's b...

seems like this might be a command line alternative to the gui app for backing up a running sd card. not clear if its' the same underlying method, no x11 to tests on at the moment.

Re: "Right to Repair Legislation and the Raspberry Pi"

A lot of diversity in how Pi's are used, without the corresponding acknowledgement that your own typical use cases is just one of many? That's maybe why I am so mad about the auto-forum locking while some other people think 180 days is too long to keep them open. Most of my projects have a hardware ...

Very nice! I'm tempted to put something like this in my crontab and set my remote pi to reboot if there's no internet for say an hour straight.

isolating project-depent changes into a single folder

Every time I start a new pi-hardware project (most recently, an automated cat door) I end up having to make changes in multiple places in the file system, including /etc/ but often /var/www, etc, (etc, etc, etc). it gets hard to keep track of it all, and even harder to replicate a subset of the chan...

Re: "Right to Repair Legislation and the Raspberry Pi"

Of all the Pi owners I've known/met? About 3% had a soldering iron. One has recently got one, but SMD work is a long way away after learning the basics like which end to hold. Plenty don't even know how to unix. It's a diverse crowd, but I encounter a lot who just use it for gaming, which IMHO is a...

Does anybody actually use lead-free solder at home? The only good place for lead-free solder is the trash ;-). Agree about the eyesight thing too - good way to separate the under and over 40 crowd.

Re: what is the use of rufus software?

From a development perspective doing the image writing on your desktop is definitely preferable. I have about 30 images on my computer at the moment, and about 10 of which are most recent revisions of different projects. You can't keep backups on a SD card that you are writing an image too, after al...

Re: "Right to Repair Legislation and the Raspberry Pi"

The fact that governments and communities have already taken on the shared cost for disposing of trash means this responsibility is not considered when a manufacturer makes the decision whether to create a repairable or non-repairable item. On the other hand, if the decision is made by those who al...

Some trivial examples I can think might affect RPT is if people want to unsolder the RAM and put on a larger one, or solder a WiFi module onto the pads of a WiFi-less CM4, but nothing to the extreme of Apple who are going to have to change the way they design their phones sold in Europe. I love thi...

Custom images is one click to get to the list, scroll to bottom of list (less than one rotation of the scroll wheel of my mouse), then click to bring up the file dialog, after which it is the same for any application. And that is too many steps? It's about 5 seconds, if that. you forgot navigating ...

it's not just that it's cheaper - the glue is waterproof, which is a definite plus for many people. gaskets are possible but add to the cost and complexity whereas the glue reduces, so... But they also glue in for example the batteries of Macbooks. And those are not known for their water resistance...

I now think the Pi3 works better as a day-to-day working computer. Not in all cases.. Yes, in all cases. I believe that the Pi3 is better in all cases than a Pi4. One interesting thing that came up whilst we were chatting about this earlier today. But that is a side-effect of cost reduction. I...

Re: what is the use of rufus software?

Personally I dislike the official pi imager. It's great for first timers, full stop. But for advanced use, it takes too many steps to use custom images and doesn't offer an option for backing up the contents of your SD card, which I do every time I finish a pi-related project and consider a critical...

Wow that's pretty cool - certainly not for noobs (hence the name change, I guess ;-). From my reading of the docs it doesn't sound like it would be possible to have two partitions installed and switch between them, just the option to nuke the current install with a old image? Most of the development on Linux systems that's queried or reported on this forum happened in the last three months. Anything six months old is history. Anything two years old belongs to the the previous version of Raspbian/RaspiOS. We must be reading (and responding to) very different parts of the...
