I haven't tried Java yet but managed to get the Fortran compiler downloaded and compiled a short program just to check and it was fine. Thanks for all the help, haven't been this excited about a computer for years!

Starting with Java / Fortran

Any idea how I can start programming with Java on my Raspberry Pi; I do not know where to start, how do I download the JDK and run it? Which OS do I need to use? Last time I wrote a program it was in Fortran77 (not counting VBA macros) so despite having a very mathematical mind I really do not know ...

I am a novice when it comes to almost any IT task but I managed to download Win 32 Image Writer Version 0.0.0.4 and used it to write the Wheezy Raspbian img file onto a card and booted up the Pi for the first time without any problems.
