Re: Backup theory question

Also, it will definitely fit back on the same card or a larger one (you can then use raspi-config to expand the image to fill the bigger card)

Re: Backup theory question

When you use dd, it copies the whole card (including empty space), so your image will be the size of the entire sd card regardless of what space is actually in use. It may fit on another 4gb card (I've had times when it doesn't). I'm not 100% certain but I think that if you want to fit your image on...

Re: apt-get dist-upgrade v. apt-get upgrade

Just adding a single data point here: I've been using Ubuntu since '05 and just starting with Rasbian. I've always used dist-upgrade and don't recall a single issue with it. Same here, I've adminned dozens of Ubuntu/Debian boxes over the last 10 years and always use dist-upgrade and haven't ever ha...

Re: Upgrading 2012-09-18-wheezy-raspbian broke SD card

Are you overclocking? There are some known problems where an overclocked system can cause file system corruption on heavy IO. I have had this myself a couple of times. It's always been after an apt-get upgrade which included new firmware, every time I've resorted to reflashing the SD card, then the ...

Re: I am really suprised My Samsung TV remote can control XB

It's called CEC (I think it's something like AnyNET on Samsung TV's), where a device can be controlled through the hdmi port :)

Re: OpenELEC vs Raspbmc vs Xbian

From my tests, they all play back video with pretty much identical performance. I haven't tried xbian 0.8 or raspbmc rc5 but I wouldn't expect them to really be any different.

It's mostly extra features and ease of use which separates the 3 at the moment in my opinion.

Re: my simple idea

Interesting idea, but that can already be done very easily using one of the XBMC distro's (or compile it yourself), then use your phone as an XBMC remote (iOS or android, or even the TV remote if it supports CEC) and install addons for all the catch up TV channels :)

On that note; does anyone have the latest stable release for Xbian, I dont have access to the disc I had it on and now that the site is down theres no way of getting it. Can someone upload it to dropbox or something like that and post the link for it? There are links to the latest release and beta ...

Re: RaspBMC vs Xbian = FUD and Slander

I'm not really sure where I stand on this. Obviously the installer violates the GPL but that wasn't created by the XBian team. As for not making source code available, I'm not certain. If I installed raspbian, cloned the xbmc git repository and compiled it, then made some tweaks to raspbian on the p...

Site is going down, all switch over to @OpenELEC for the best XBMC distro for raspberry pi, thanks to everyone who helped me! Re: Updating to the 2012-09-18-wheezy-raspbian image

I guess they're not using our deb packages from archive.raspberrypi.org. You could either try to install those debs (so add "deb http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian/ wheezy main" to your /etc/apt/sources.list), or you could update firmware using rpi-update and then install raspi-config http://arc...

I don't know if its only my second build that has this problem, but I can't find a way to sort it (I've found a couple of mentions of it when googling, but haven't managed to find a fix). If a video isn't full screen, rather than getting black bars, I have console text: http://i.imgur.com/ejU3f.jpg ...

Re: SCUMMvm and Frotz?

If it was installed through apt, you can remove it by running:
sudo apt-get remove packagename

Or to completely purge (remove all configs etc..) a package:
sudo apt-get purge packagename

Another useful command to see if you have something installed:
dpkg -l | grep packagename

Re: SCUMMvm and Frotz?

I'm not sure there's a definitive list of what's in the repo, but you can search it :) apt-cache search scummvm it will match partial names as well, so 'scumm' would return scummvm: [email protected] ~ $ apt-cache search scumm scummvm - engine for several graphical adventure games scummvm-data - engine...

Re: OpenELEC vs Raspbmc vs Xbian

On the development side, xbian build on the actual pi which means it takes days to build a complicated project like xbmc instead of half an hour on a modern PC. Till today I still have not got around the idea of native building on the pi itself: tens if not hundreds times slower than cross-compilin...

Re: 160 GB external hard drive

This is off the top of my head so may not be 100%

In xbmc, go to videos, then files, then add source. Choose root file system, then navigate to /mnt/usb0 (it may be /media/usb0, i cant remember exactly) and add that as a source.

XBMC should remember it from then on!

It should be a case of plug it in and start XBMC - as far as I know, Raspbmc automatically mounts any USB drives.

Re: Instructions for building XBMC for Raspbian

Disaster!
I just did the latest dist-upgrade, and part way through my SD card went into readonly mode. I tried to save it but after getting everything updated it wouldn't boot.

So, I get to start all over again. At least I can check if the steps I stored in a text file work :)

Re: OpenELEC vs Raspbmc vs Xbian

I've only really tried Raspbmc and XBian, and realistically they are very similar. They both play back the same formats and have largely the same performance for playback and menu speed etc.. XBian seems to be updated more frequently, but Raspbmc has more features (it implemented pulsecec first, has...

Re: Instructions for building XBMC for Raspbian

I may have fixed cec - I ran cec-config and it complained about a libcec.so error, so I symlinked the libraries into /usr/lib (they were placed in /usr/local/lib when I compiled it). cec-config now works, but my wife is watching TV so I can't test it out :)

I compiled pulse eight cec before xbmc using the instructions from Darkness. I used the workaround from th...
