Brilliant, that was the answer. I could edit the profile to add the & and I am now back to the GUI with the python script running.

Sadly, not there yet. [Ctrl}[Alt][F2] gets me to a login page: Raspbian GNU/Linux 7raspberrypi tty3 raspberrypi login: I enter the username in my beginners book pi [enter] It asks for a password: Password: I think the password is ‘raspberry’ but the keyboard doesn’t respond and I can’t type anything...
