I thought the 3b+ could boot from usb without a sd card in the sd slot?

Im not sure Im getting across what Im doing so Ill try again.

3b+ boots fine from sd card in sd slot.
3b+ will NOT boot if I try to boot the SAME sd card but using it in an sd adapter in one of the usb ports

Ive tried booting from the sd card in a usb converter (see original post)
This does not work either so its not my hard drive.

SD card vs usb Flash drive

OK Ive heard all about the short lifespan of the sd card when using one on a raspberry, and many suggest using a usb flash drive for the often written to files.
But arent flash drive the same memory as SD cards?
Wont these 'wear out' too?

Ive tried to boot from 3 HDD and none work. They dont start to spin up until the boot process starts so even adding a boot delay doesnt work. Tried a usb spiltter power cable but again the drives dont actually spin up until boot. So Im stuck with SD and usb hdd at the moment thats why I wondered abo...

Ive got 3 2.5 HDD in usb caddies and none of them work. Ive tried setting a boot delay to give the HDD time to power up but it seems they dont receive any power until the boot process starts so this has no effect. I have a usb splitter with power but even if I power the hard drives they dont appear ...

Ok Ive tried it on a usb drive and it works fine, so its my HDD.

Is there anything I can do to make it boot on the HDD?

It must be my HDD doesnt spin up fast enough on boot?

What else can I do?
I really need at least my www folder and files on the usb.

Further investigation.
tried to comment out the cmdline.txt to make it boot from the SD and it wont.

ok so I have raspian already in my sd card.

I have a blank usb HDD.

I dont have to put an image onto the HDD? I can just run the script and select YES to copy over?

What about ssh? will it work this way?

and doesnt a mail server require at least 2GB ram?

apart from the mailserver, does a webserver etc run better with 2GB?

I was thinking the 3b+ because its cheaper over here in the UK? but if the 4 is better then Ill pay the extra.
