Since I was still having trouble with dual monitors, I thought I should retry everything with a clean install of Buster, with the latest update. Still having trouble, even following latest update (and I had to accept changes [--allow-releaseinfo-change] because things went "stable"). I'm using two HDMI monitors, admittedly older, but each works individually in HDMI0 whilst in HDMI1 they each show only the rainbow screen and nothing further. ...

Having used the 2GB and 4GB versions for a few days, I can say that the Raspi 4B is by far the closest to being a plausible desktop computer of any of the Raspis. No surprise there. I'm also having trouble running a combination of HDMI and DVI monitors. Each works fine in the HDMI0 port (I'm using a DVI->HDMI cable for one and HDMI->HDMI for the other).
