Try putting the text of the error message into Google; I'm pretty sure you'll find some other folk have had that sort of issue... ;)

Re: MMAL Motion - tuning & optimisations

Hello dozencrows, now the new raspbian based on debian jessie has been released, a few of motions dependencies are only available in newer versions. This leads to the fact that your per-built motion binary will no longer start on up-to-date raspbian systems. Could you provide an updated pre-built b...

Re: flash led in motion-mmal

The source code is in Github, there have been links posted to it in other threads on this forum - here you go! https://github.com/dozencrows/motion/tree/mmal-test Using flash is an interesting idea, and has some challenges. For accurate timing, you'll probably need to modify the motion code. And bea...

Raspberry Pi in a prototype Smart Remote Control

Primarily as a learning experience, I've been using the Raspberry Pi as a prototyping platform for creating a smart remote control along the lines of the Logitech Harmony series. I've built it up using LIRC, Python and some basic custom circuitry. I started with a basic IR capture and send circuit v...

Re: target_dir Motion MMAL

There isn't an issue with target_dir of which I'm aware. Please supply examples showing how you're running motion as a daemon and from the console - I'd like to first eliminate the straightforward possibilities such as whether you're running the version of motion you expect, and from where it loads ...

Good luck! Do post back on how you get on with WiFi. And many thanks for considering donating... but no need! If anyone is asking for donations to support the MMAL version of motion, then I'm pretty sure they're scamming - as far as I know, I'm the only one who has publicly worked on the code and ha...

Re: MMAL Motion - tuning & optimisations

How long roughly is the latency that you experience? One thought I had is that when motion is running, for some reason your Pi is dropping packets sent over the WiFi. Not quite sure how you'd test that, but it would be worth trying a wired connection as you suggest. I'd also make sure that you've de...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

I have followed the instructions on this page. Motion starts on bootup although it turns off again after a few seconds. Have you looked in the log file to see if it gives any helpful information? The default for the MMAL version is /home/pi/motion.log If that doesn't say much, try increasing the lo...

Re: MMAL Motion - tuning & optimisations

I have tried to update to the mmal-test code from dropbox. I essentially was unable to implement ANY of the options I think. It failed to attach the camera until I disabled almost all of them. There could be changes in recent firmware that MMAL motion isn't happy with (which has occurred in the pas...

Just to check - have you tried using the secondary buffer options from this thread http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=75240 ? For the time being, if you're happy using the Pi camera's video rather than stills mode and just capture JPEG image sequences (i.e. don't use movie encodi...

Re: motion on RPi 2

Thanks for trying motion-mmal on the Pi 2! I'm not surprised at lack of noticeable speed-up; however if you're seeing a lower frame rate, that's odd. Are you building motion-mmal yourself, or using the Dropbox binary? To get a chance at faster motion, you'll need to build the motion-mmal binary itse...

Re: NoIR Camera with motion

Basically the motion detection and movie encoding for live streaming are running on the Pi CPU, and demanding a lot of processing power - hence the low frame rate. Because of the way motion works, it needs serious changing to make use of the Pi's H264 GPU video encoding. As a step in that direction,...

Re: Need to pick the collective brains here

I've used /etc/rc.local as a means of auto running apps on startup - not as clean as the init.d approach, but simpler and may be worth trying to see if it works after power cycling. See http://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/linux/usage/rc-local.md for more detail. However there are risks - see th...

Re: motion kills the camera - needs power cycle

This started happening to one of my motion installs for my 'cat-cam'. In my case, it was the Pi itself ageing - the voltage across the two test points was drooping below 4.8v. I switched to a newer Pi with the same camera, power supply and SD card - and it became reliable again. I would recommend ch...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

@whocares_ido - the mmal binaries are experimental, and are not configured to be installable. You don't need to install to run; just type the following when in the motion source directory: ./motion -n -c configs/motion-mmalcam.conf Note that the preceding dot-slash ./ is critical, as this ensures m...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

I think you are on the master branch, not the mmal branch. If when you type 'git status' it say "On branch master", then that will be the problem.

You can switch to the mmal branch by typing 'git checkout mmal-test'.

Re: MMAL Motion - tuning & optimisations

Hi, I have a limitation of only 2 frames/sec when using "mmalcam_use_still on". In still mode, the Pi camera has to spend fair while setting itself up (e.g. calculating exposure) to get a good shot; that along with the CPU cost of the motion detection will limit the frame rate that can be achieved ...

Re: Motion - MMAL camera

There is a web interface to motion gives you that kind of control. If you set webcontrol_port in the config file (e.g. to 8080) you can then connect via web browser (or your own program) to that port and control motion's behaviour. You'll also need to set webcontrol_localhost to 'off' if you want to...

Re: Motion-Mmal: I want to disable live stream capabilities

As per the comments in the supplied config file's 'Live Stream Server' section, you can disable streaming by setting stream_port to zero. If streaming is enabled but no client (e.g. web browser) is connected, then it doesn't stream - and consequently doesn't use up processing power. If you watch the...
