I too saw this and thought it looked very interesting but I had the same problem and I know very little about Linux so I got nowhere.
I've written to their sales address asking for help and will post here if I find anything, if you solve it I would be grateful if you would let me know.

Hi, I am interested in using the Raspberry Pi as an automation controller/server, I currently use PowerHome on a Windows box, which works great but I want to reduce the controller hardware in size and power consumption and get rid of moving parts like disks and fans. The RPi seems the ideal platform...

Thanks, I finally got it unzipped after a series of .tar0 etc directories, not exactly sure the steps I took so I probably will be very little wiser next time :-)
