Re: External Drives dismounts for unknown reasons, help plea

Thanks for the assistance, dmesg gave a message about not being able to communicate with a drive and possibly a faulty cable so I switched the cable out, this didn't help but when I switched the Pi out for a spare I had 'touch wood' it's being working flawlessly for three days now. I may have had a ...

Re: External Drives dismounts for unknown reasons, help plea

The on-board power isn't enough to power the drive sadly. I could try a single random usb stick directly in the pi, see if that gets unmounted when this problem hits.

Re: External Drives dismounts for unknown reasons, help plea

So bad USB port, bad hub or bad cable.

I suppose I'm left with trial and error to figure out which one is causing the problem.
I think I have a spare of all of those.

Re: External Drives dismounts for unknown reasons, help plea

I have found in dmesg all the usual startup commands, nothing out of the ordinary for a few hours until this happens [19954.115990] usb 1-1.2: USB disconnect, device number 4 [19954.116033] usb 1-1.2.3: USB disconnect, device number 5 [19954.132070] usb 1-1.2.4: USB disconnect, device number 6 [1995...

Re: External Drives dismounts for unknown reasons, help plea

Okay so the plot thickens. I noticed the problem today (but unfortunately forgot to check dmesg) that some directories (just a few) were giving an input/output error when I try to ls them. This would indicate a faulty drive. How do I check the logging that smartmonctl is performing? Nothing is appea...

Re: External Drives dismounts for unknown reasons, help plea

Looking at the results I would assume a reset of the device resets dmesg so I will have to get back to you, after all, I sometimes am forced to reset it to remedy it short term so I can access the files on it. I will follow up next time the problem occurs.

Re: External Drives dismounts for unknown reasons, help plea

Can dmesg be used to monitor over a long time, it can sometimes take up to a week. Also can you expand on how I use smartctrl to monitor the drive, I've installed it, set it to run as a daemon but there are so many things to configure I don't understand barely a scratch of it, the drive I'm mostly c...

Re: External Drives dismounts for unknown reasons, help plea

Thanks for that advice, ill install it and get in running so I can see the problem. I've done some further searching online and most people that get this problem have it because of insufficient power, I really dont expect this to be the cause because the same thing that happens to /mnt/raspidata als...

External Drives dismounts for unknown reasons, help please.

I have a raspberry pi acting as a file server on my local network which for about 2 years has worked nearly flawlessly but recently the hard drive keeps un-mounting itself for unknown reasons. I don't know enough about mounting to be able to diagnose this on my own so I could use a little help figur...

Pass package missing

I'm trying to install pass (password manager) on my raspberry pi and yet I keep getting a message saying apt-get cannot locate the package for pass. I might be missing something obvious but this seems a little strange, I have no trouble getting most other debian packages [11:49:43] [email protected] ...

Wheezy Raspbian Support

I cant find any mention on the blog post (the one announcing Raspbian Jessie) that says when security support stops for Raspbian Wheezy. Things are pretty hectic in my life right now and I don't have time to be updating my server at the drop of a hat, I'm hoping security updates continue for a littl...

Re: Noobs - Default to specific install.

This second option wont let you boot to Retropie at all without editing autoboot.txt so isn't ideal, the first option is overidden as soon as you boot into another os so doesn't help either. I'm surprised this isn't a feature in noobs.

Re: Noobs - Default to specific install.

I saw this but the part at the bottom reads "Note that these defaults will be overwritten by any changes made in the GUI to these settings." Perhaps I have misinterpreted this, I will try and report back.

Noobs - Default to specific install.

I have noobs installed with Retropie and Openelec, the default behaviour for noobs is to boot whichever install was most recently used in 10 seconds unless I change it quickly. Is there a way to change it so Openelec will ALWAYS be booted unless I change it within 10 seconds. Very similar behaviour ...

I'm using one of my Pi's as a bit of general server for NFS shares, SSH tunneling and transmission torrent server, problem I've got is that every time I reboot this Pi the transmission daemon starts as the root user and I have to login over SSH and run sudo service transmission-daemon stop to stop i...

How to automount a SD card and run a script on Raspian?

I'll explain what I want to do and can people please suggest the best method (keeping it simple, I'm no expert.). I want to be able to plug in a SD card into an adaptor via USB, then have a bash script to automatically mount, copy all .jpg files from it, then unmount it. I've read I can build a udev...

I've sort of managed to get NFS working but I'm hitting a minor hitch. I've read this post and used some tips from it http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14500 I notice that portmapper doesn't need to be running so long as rpcbind is running so if I use sudo service rpcbind start; sudo...

I know Dropbox doesn't have an ARM client, but can it be built from source as described on their install instructions page https://www.dropbox.com/help/247/en For the record I have never compiled anything from source before hence the reason I'd ask first before jumping straight in and trying, I don'...

CEC problems works on HDMI 1 not HDMI 3

I'm using Raspbmc on a raspberry pi model b. My TV is a toshiba with their fancy named Regza-Link, CEC compatibility really, which has worked great no problems on HDMI 1. I recently had to move my PC into the lounge onto the big screen and due to hardware limitations sound will only work on HDMI 1 s...
