Re: How can I upgrade to Raspbian Lite April 2019 version?

Also , if you want the newest kernel, which is 4.19, and not 4.14, just open the terminal and type: sudo rpi-update It'll update the kernel and you'll have to reboot. If you have ANY issues after this, then revert back to 4.14. I've been using 4.19 for about two days now, and haven't experienced an...

Re: vlc player mp4

Nope, it's the plain old VLC with H/W acceleration, so it'll play whatever you throw at it. MP4? MKV? MOV? doesn't matter. It should play them perfectly without any lag or issues. What type of hardware are you using?

[Solved] How to minimize a window via keyboard shortcut?

Oy! So I'm currently running a very minimal build of Raspbian Lite and Openbox, and I've tuned and customized it to my liking. I tend to zip around terminals and Chromium using the keyboard, but every time I actually want to minimize Chromium (so it's not always in the background of the terminals), ...

Re: Chromium v72

New chromium is freezing up my system. Lucky I can ssh and reboot. I also noticed a lot of chromium threads in htop. How's your swap? Note that your system will 100% hang and freeze if you let the system fill its RAM to 100%, which will happen the moment it can't swap. Swap is set at 100MB at defau...

Re: Chromium v72

Been running it since yesterday, and I haven't noticed any bugs, glitches etc. It might be me and my setup, but it feels way smoother than v65 ,which wouldn't surprise me, but is a welcome "surprise". I have also enabled smooth scrolling through chrome://flags, and scrolling is very satisfying now. ...

Re: STICKY: USB boot now working on Pi3

$30-ish, 120 GB Kingston A400 SSD works flawlessly on my 3B+. Boots and reboots just fine. Now you know.

Re: Why is the Raspbian desktop experience so slow?

Quick update: Office Web works "fine" on the Pi, but I wouldn't use it too often. I'll keep it as a backup solution for that one time I have no other way of editing a document that's stored in OneDrive. There's a slight delay - or latency, while typing in Word. Probably not more than 100 ms or so, b...

Re: Why is the Raspbian desktop experience so slow?

If those kind of searches could not be done on the Pi at a remotely comparable speed, it might be difficult to use it as a daily machine. Indeed. I'm a minimalist, so I'm running a minimal install of Raspbian Lite with Openbox without an email client or anything. I don't even have a clock. If I do ...

Re: Why is the Raspbian desktop experience so slow?

Just look at this bad boy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-EQ77KijWI I completely agree on the bulk of an SSD, and that's why I've hidden it inside my desk! It's not even remotely practical in case I want to take it with me (it would take a minute or two to get it out), but it looks at least very ...

Re: Why is the Raspbian desktop experience so slow?

Yup! Which is why I got an SSD, since they're made for swapping and whatnot, while MicroSDs are not. Still, 200 MB would be better than 100, but I understand WHY you've set it to 100. People who want to increase it does so themselves though, so no harm has been done, lol.

Re: Why is the Raspbian desktop experience so slow?

It's a Raspberry Pi. Sure, it does a lot of things great, and other things, like browsing the modern web in Chromium, less great. Keep in mind that we're using a $35 computer. With that said, I'm using my 3B+ as a desktop computer. There are a couple of things you can do to elevate the user experien...

Re: [HowTo!] Smooth youtube 1080p in Chromium

Increasing vRAM to either 192 or 256 MB, and increasing Swap (100 -> 1024 MB+), and using an SSD instead of the a MicroSD, makes a huge difference in performance. Still, YouTube is just so badly optimized for weak hardware, that it's laughable. Chromium will play 1080p and even 60p YouTube on my Pi,...

[Quick Guide] How to get a better browsing and YouTube experience [vRAM+SWAP]

Title says "browsing" and "YouTube", but this applies system wide. I recently got my hands on a 3B+, and I've been playing around with it this whole week. Suffice to say, the Raspberry Pi isn't exactly a powerful system, and freezes and complete lockups have been the norm. Granted, it's not really m...
