Re: do i need SWAP on RPi4 with 4GB?

if i have to use swap, then i don't want it on any flash storage... can i move the swap completely into RAM? One alternative solution is to use zram or zswap , which will compress the swap to RAM. In case you want to avoid ware to memory card, or the card is slow. OF course, the compression is goin...

Is there a way I can change my current WiFi network to a different one via command line / code and without having to reboot my device? You can restart the wireless networking service using wpa_cli -i wlan0 reconfigure See https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/wireless/wireless-cli...

You can install the [email protected] package on your Raspberry Pi, as foldforcovid.io is based on [email protected] for job distribution.

Re: Proper (extreme) cooling of Pi4 incl. CPU undervolt and possibly other?

My final question would be about undervolting CPU, RAM, USB controller (after the firmware update ofc). How much improvement temperaturewise can be expected? How is it done? MagPi issue 88 , starting at page 66, talks about how the firmware upgrades have improved the temperatures and power draw. Th...

google also has a zoom clone called "meets". so it has a client (and probably a chromium addon) and a webpage for conferencing. I wonder if it would run any better than Duo? I've used Google Meet, and it works pretty well. Screen sharing also works! As the Raspberry Pi does not have an audio input ...

There is only the one instance running so if I close it, then the camera can't work. I guess I don't understand why I'm being told close the instance. The instance has to be closed, so that other programs (and when you restart your program), can access the camera. This is just some guessing , as I ...

Re: How to connect pi to phone without wifi?

You enable / configure WiFi and Hotspot on the Android Phone. You can also use USB tethering for Raspberry Pis that do not support on-board wifi. The Android device is detected as a generic Ethernet device. This has the advantage of letting the Android device connect to wifi (as the wifi chip isn't...

Re: I can't ping my pi

The Raspberry Pi Zero has to be an Ethernet gadget. Add, on a newline, at the end of the config.txt file dtoverlay=dwc2 You will also need to add modules-load=dwc2,g_ether at the end of the cmdline.txt file. To enable SSH, add a file called ssh on the SD card. Make sure to plug in your Raspberry Pi ...

You can install the VLC media player that is available on Raspbian with desktop. If it isn't installed, you'll need to run in a terminal window: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install vlc To open a terminal window, press CTRL + ALT + T . VLC is a general purpose media player that can play a wid...

Re: What is the best way to create compressed disk image?

- Compress ~4GB shrinked file using zip. The file becomes about 1.8 GB Compressing the image using the bzip2 compression algorithm is more efficient than using zip (with DEFLATE compression). You can compress a file with the bzip2 compression algorithm using the 7-Zip compression utility. Make sure...

My problem is I write the image to the card and it creates a 16 gig partition (If I'm using that term correctly) and basically ignores or erases the remaining space.
You can resize the main partition (ext4 type) in a program such as gparted.

Re: "Introducing Raspberry Pi Imager, our new imaging utility"

This software does not verify .img has been written correctly. Wasn't this the reason Etcher was recommended originally, to protect users against fake SD cards, by verifying the written data? If QT is the culprit ( or a setting in QT) then it needs looking at. Cross platform ease cannot come before...

Re: "Introducing Raspberry Pi Imager, our new imaging utility"

Great, hopefully we will see the end of NoobS :D The Raspberry Pi Imager utility seems to be a replacement for BalenaEtcher. No more bloat, as the program is written in C++. It is not exactly a replacement for NOOBS, as you need to have sufficient privileges to be able to write to the SD card. Alth...

To reduce wear on the SD card, I modified my fstab. Logs and other temporary data are written to a tmpfs in RAM. The tmpfs lines could be replaced with mounts to external storage devices. I also have disabled (and uninstalled) the swapfile present by default on Raspbian. Here is my fstab, adapt it t...

This problem still exists: when Chromium is running, after 24 hours, iostat reports me that MB_wrtn=1.8G have been written to mmcblk0 (the microSD card). I do not have any intense writing tasks. iotop also reports frequent writing, as confirmed by fkbreitl. I will try the solutions that he shared.

To use redshift on Raspberry Pi, you need to use the experimental OpenGL driver as the default one (legacy driver) does not support gamma correction. See this Github issue . Changing drivers is done in raspi-config, in the "Advanced Options" category. I have used the OpenGL desktop driver with full ...

if you are using a USB webcam, you can alternatively use fswebcam. If you are using Python, you'll need to launch the fswebcam process using something like subprocess.run().

I've read on the SD card Wikipedia article that the read-only switch is controlled by software so there could be something there, on the software side. A mounting problem? No, the original 2B....! Its a bit painful at times and sometimes the desktop freezes and I've had to SSH in to kill processes to get it back.
