Yes, it absolutely has to be ODBC. I don't so much mind MariaDB - it seems to just be some fork of MySQL... (so long as it works with the MySQL syntax)... this of course leads me to why this is so poorly supported... im pretty sure a MySQL driver of ODBC would work fine for MariaDB... libmyodbc seem...

In the end, even tho my Putty session issued a "broken pipe" error... i left it over night... the next day i guessed it had completed, and i typed "mono" into the CLI... and it responded! Interesting i have done this a few times now... sometimes the exact same thing takes only a few minutes... maybe...
