Re: Updated Astronomy/Weather Clock - leap seconds

Hey, this is actually a really amazing project and I just love it. I've been wanting a sort of dedicated clock w/weather and etc for quite some time and have been trying different ways to try to do one. Unfortunately, the programming side of things has been been a bit much for me. I think this is ex...

Re: How good is the camera? Wondering about viability for car multi-purpose device.

Now that is very interesting to hear. I think in general I prefer USB DACs and I may still do it in this case just so there's that much more actual physical filtering of everything before it actually gets to the final output stage since, as others have stated, the power in a car is a bit of a mess. ...

Re: How good is the camera? Wondering about viability for car multi-purpose device.

I don't have an IR thermometer no. It gets really hot here in the summers (34 outside at a time like this) so it definitely gets very hot inside my car even though I usually remember to put covers up in my windshield to at least help (definitely drops it several degrees.) It absolutely gets hot in t...

Re: How good is the camera? Wondering about viability for car multi-purpose device.

Well, remember part of the consideration here is whether it could be a single device to manage multiple tasks. The video recording would be the most demanding by far (I don't intend to do voice control things or anything like that) but not the only task. It might be possible to move it to a somewhat...

How good is the camera? Wondering about viability for car multi-purpose device.

So I'm sort of wondering about the viability of using a Raspberry Pi (3 I guess? I presume a Zero couldn't handle this -- I have a 3 I can spare right now and a Zero W I can spare soon-ish) in my car. I'm sure you see a lot of that sort of thing here. IF I went that route I will of course have to fi...

Re: Viability of using a USB power bank as a UPS?

Well, the idea here is to find a way to make use of existing "power banks" that have fair capacity on their own. This has a few problems in that respect. For starters, it would be impossible to in any way use it with one of these power banks. It uses a step-down converter (and it seems lik...

Options for a car setup with music and Android interface (esp. Google Assistant interaction)

One thing I've been considering is I'd really like to setup something simple and cheap using a RPi Zero W I ultimately never had a use for to do the things my currently rather old (but still fairly good quality) car head unit can't do rather than buying a $150+ unit capable of what, realistically sp...

Re: Viability of using a USB power bank as a UPS?

That seems like the right sort of idea, but no mention of costs. I'm guessing it's probably still too much. Actually, from the look of it, they're probably largely looking for OEMs and sell in bulk rather than individuals anyway.

Re: Viability of using a USB power bank as a UPS?

My rule of thumb is to assume about 85% efficiency for each conversion with DC-DC converters. They'll claim to be as high as ~92% or so, but that's at a specific optimal voltage range which 5V is never in (usually something like 32V or so depending on the converter.) So I consider it to be ~72% effi...

Re: Viability of using a USB power bank as a UPS?

By most standards, Pis *don't* support proper power saving features. I'm not sure. It seems the Pi2 and 3 support CPU governors and the like. If it isn't actually scaling I'm not sure I see the point (and if it is this will affect power usage regardless of intent.) That said, as a rule of thumb, fi...

Re: Viability of using a USB power bank as a UPS?

Most "power banks", and especially the inexpensive ones, are unlikely to support input and output power simultaneously and that is what a UPS has to do. In addition, many power banks cannot be charged at a rate higher than their discharge rate (I've seen ones that can supply 2A, but can o...

Viability of using a USB power bank as a UPS?

First, sorry if I got the wrong forum. I'm a beginner at any sort of programming/etc and can't really do much of this sort of thing myself, so I'm a beginner in that respect. Anyway, to the heart of the matter. I'm curious about how viable it might be to sort of rig up a USB power bank to act as a U...

Re: Unable to get RPi to work with old DVI monitor

Upon looking into it further, I guess the monitor really is just analog only, which is just stupid, but there you have it. The odd thing is, it acts like digital -- meaning it doesn't show all the obvious adjustments and etc you'd normally get with VGA on a LCD.

Unable to get RPi to work with old DVI monitor

I was hoping to use a second RPi running the current official Raspbian release as a sort of secondary PC for a few simple tasks from time to time (I have another dedicated to being a server for stuff like downloads, network sharing, Squid, and etc, but it's pretty dedicated to that stuff, plus some ...

Partitioning and formatting the SDHC card for best results?

As far as I can really tell, the images and such aren't really aligning the partitions for the best results with SDHC. The problem, of course, is that SDHC has to be aligned differently from a harddrive and most tools are just looking at these as being basically a harddrive (it doesn't help that the...
