Re: A simple way to get all IP and MAC addresses on my network

Have fun deciphering this. This will do it but I wouldn't call it very readable or simple. { ip address | sed -rn "1h;2,\$H;\${g;s/.*link\/ether ([^ ]+).*inet ([^\/]+).*/\2\t\1/g;p}" && arp-scan -lqxg; } | sort -V That is Sweet, @trejan! JFYI, here's what I get from my DNS/DHCP to...

Re: A simple way to get all IP and MAC addresses on my network

Hmm. I should have made it clearer that you only get MAC address output with sudo nmap Like I said (and demonstrated) [sudo] nmap -sn 192.168.1.0/24 will show me the IP of all devices on the network but it does not show MAC address for the local device (neither ethernet nor wifi) And I think your e...

Re: Where is my samba.conf?

Strange one this! All the tutorials I see about sharing and mapping network drives require editing of the smb.conf file - but I can't find it! It's supposed to be in /etc/samba/ but it's not. Searching in file manager from root down results in an empty screen. Anyone want to teach a newbie how to f...

Re: A simple way to get all IP and MAC addresses on my network

I am not at home, but nmap reports IP as well as MAC adresses in hospital network (whole network scan would be /16): I get both IP and MAC addresses on my home network with nmap -sn. It's SMOP to grab the output and get IP and MAC address on a single line. As an aside, I tamed my home network years...

Re: Easily make any program run on system start-up

Sadly, adding yet another autostart method, however user friendly and well designed just adds to the confusion. It doesn't appear to be adding a new method. It's a poorly described tool to create and manage minimal .desktop files for the existing autostart directory. And, in a forum that is used by...

In praise of apt-cacher-ng

I run apt-cacher-ng on my network. Like many of you, today I installed several updates, which for me totaled slightly over 118MB. The first Pi I updated took 50 seconds to download all the bits. The rest of the Pis did the same download (from the caching server) in 5 seconds each. If you have more t...

Re: What about a keypress-enabled rescue micro-AP feature?

In other words, when networkd is given an empty address assignment like "Address=0.0.0.0/24" it looks among the configured interfaces and picks by itself a non-conflicting subnet. It chose "10.0.0.1/24" for ap0 in this case, I connected a client and received 10.0.0.15 via DHCP. ...

Ok, so tiggerhappy looks to be running on my copy of raspios light and the manpage says ... Triggerhappy is especially suited to hardware related switches like volume or wifi control ... So I guess I'd better learn how to use it. I have found a useful feature in systemd-networkd (...) Take a look: ...

Also, did you try my suggestion about using the octal representation for "!" in your fstab instead of putting it in quotes?

I wonder if the "!" in your share name is causing an issue. What is the result of changing your fstab line to be

You could use triggerhappy, which comes installed on RasPiOS, to define a key to run the lock program @klricks mentions. See `man thd` for details.

Re: What about a keypress-enabled rescue micro-AP feature?

Interesting idea, @epoch. I built an simple "automatic AP" ( https://github.com/gitbls/autoap ) that uses wpa_supplicant and systemd-networkd (which has a nice built-in DHCP server) that you might find useful as a starting point. It comes up with wpa_supplicant in AP mode if it can't conne...

I'll take a look at strongswan thanks. I did take a look at some videos on opnsense but I wonder if its not overkill for what I'm trying to achieve. II see that 20 lines is insufficient. Can you repeat the journalctl command with the system using the mac address version, except change "-n 20" to "-n 50"?. I was overly optimistic in how many lines it would take. Sorry. Why is it probing 192.168.1.131? Do you have any other unc...

If they are known networks, I wonder if you could use (what appears to be) the router's MAC address per the example in `man dhcpcd.conf`. More specific, and therefore more reliable. I've done this with strongSwan, but not Wireguard. I suspect the principles are the same, though. You may need to muck with the routing tables on the systems that you want to route over the VPN to the remote end, or, as suggested, use real routing software that is more handy at doing these things. ...

I'm also in the "less installed by default is better" camp. It's SO easy to install software onto your Pi. In fact, you can do it (at least) 3 different ways: In the IMG file on your computer before you burn it to an SSD/SD Card On the SD Card before you ever boot it On your running system...

There are fetchmail man pages scattered all over the internet, of course, so you can read about it wi...
