Re: No DHCP hostname provided for wlan0

I'm using the internal wifi (renamed to ap0) as an access point via hostapd and dnsmasq, while the USB dongle and eth0 are meant to connect to available networks and provide a feed-through to the internet when possible. Wlan0 and eth0 do not have any special settings in dhcpcd.conf. The local networ...

No DHCP hostname provided for wlan0

I have a Pi3 with raspbian stretch installed. I noticed that when I plug into ethernet, the Pi's hostname is broadcast to DHCP on the local network allowing me to ping the system by name. However when I plug in a wifi dongle (which obtains DHCP from the same network server) no hostname is provided. ...

Re: Trouble with 8188eu under Stretch

I picked up an Edimax EW-7811Un device this week. Plugged it in and everything worked instantly out of the box. If anyone else comes along looking for a solution to the 8188eu chipset my suggestion is to throw it in the trash and don't waste any more time with it. :?

Re: Trouble with 8188eu under Stretch

Still no luck getting a solid association of the wifi, however every once in awhile it does seem to make the connection and even obtain an IP address... and almost immediately dumps it. There are three persistent lines scrolling through syslog about every 5 seconds. RTL871X: nolinked power save ente...

Re: Trouble with 8188eu under Stretch

All right, the new driver is in place and the system rebooted. There's a whole lot more traffic in syslog now referring to RTL871X and rtl8188e, but it still doesn't seem to want to associate with my WAP. Running 'iwlist wlan0 scan' still only produces the one or two entries. Scanning on ap0 shows m...

Re: Trouble with 8188eu under Stretch

OK any thoughts on why the kernel isn't updating? I've run apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, and apt-get dist-upgrade. That should have been enough to get everything up to date and is pretty much the standard practice after every new installation. Oddly, I noticed that /lib/modules/ contains kernels ...

Re: Trouble with 8188eu under Stretch

One other lead I forgot to mention... there are several pages which discuss compiled drivers for this chipset at http://downloads.fars-robotics.net/ The problem is that they provide drivers for kernels 4.9 and 4.14, but skipped right over 4.13. I've fully updated my installation and have 4.13.16-v7 ...

Trouble with 8188eu under Stretch

I have an RPi3B with the built-in wifi, but also a second wifi provided through USB. This device is reported as: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:8179 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188EUS 802.11n Wireless Network Adapter I originally had this hardware set up running Jessie but thought I should upgrade,...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

I've been playing with a different tactic today. There's a lot of articles related to using a single wifi device and both an AP and a client so I thought I'd see what happens. Basically you split off a new interface device as the AP and use the original wlan as your client. Setup was easy enough, bu...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

One more bit of information that I've been seeing... whenever hostapd is running (on wlan0) scanning for SSIDs from wlan1 will only return the ssid that hostapd is providing. On the other hand if I run the same scan from wlan0, even while hostapd is running, I get a list of all the other SSIDs in th...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

Through various tests of booting with and without udev rules and flipping the device definitions within those rules, I think I've managed to cover about every combination of which device is doing what. Last night I even pulled down a Jessie image and set everything up with a proper interfaces file (...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

Yes as I've mentioned I have confirmed that the built-in wifi always comes up as wlan0. I've tried using the udev rules above but it made no difference. I've even intentionally swapped the devices around and confirmed that both of them are capable of running as the AP (I can see the SSID appear on m...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

No I didn't install hostapd yet. I don't want to set a static IP for a wlan that is connecting to another network, I want to set the static IP for the access point. This is going to serve as a stand-alone network that might occasionally connect to other available networks via the second wlan, but mo...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

All right, lets see if I can get this to work this time... The image file is 2017-11-29-raspbian-stretch-lite.img. I have run raspi-config to set the hostname, locale, and enable ssh, then rebooted. Running apt-get update/upgrade to make sure I'm at the latest version of everything. Per the install ...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

I found a note here which says some people are having problems with hostapd starting due to a conflict in versions of dnsmasq older than 2.77, and sure enough I have 2.76. The fix is to purge dns-root-data, but unfortunately it seems that if you find the problem after everything has been installed i...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

I just ran across your github page, so I'm cutting and pasting exactly from your example. Starting out with no wpa_supplicant file so wlan1 doesn't get configured, and I shut down dnsmasq and hostapd. I'm starting back at the simple step of trying to set the static IP for wlan0 and can't even get th...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

Well crap... ok any suggestions? Also the "denyinterfaces wlan1" line was a mistake, that killed wlan1 completely, so I removed it and rebooted. Still no idea why the static IP on wlan0 will not set, other than the change in IP it matches all the examples I'm finding, and it's a copy/paste of what I...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

Yeah that occurred to me as I was driving in to work... after I re-imaged the card I copied wpa_supplicant-wlan1.conf back into place, so *of course* wlan1 can connect and wlan0 cannot. Although it still mystifies me as to why wlan didn't auto-connect until I did the ifconfig up on it. So I went ahe...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

Oh it's there... if I do "ifconfig wlan1 up" then it shows up in the list. And the funny thing is I just did a reboot after that command and now suddenly wlan1 is getting an IP address... but wlan0 is still unconfigured. I would have thought the internal wifi would be the first thing to try and grab...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

Yeah I decided last night to just take a full backup of where I was at, then wiped the card and reloaded a fresh raspbian again. Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

Ugh... at the suggestion of one of the threads I did and rpi-update. That seems to have destroyed the setup for the LCD screen so I had to dig up a monitor cable to see what was going on now. Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

So I'm back to using the dhcpcd and seem to be right back where I started again. With nothing in the interfaces file there appears to be nothing actually telling wlan1 to use wpa_supplicant-wlan1.conf. The script at /lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-hooks/10-wpa_supplicant seems to indicate that it will automatica...

Re: Pi3 with dual wifi

Unfortunately I already had the wpa_supplicant files split up that way... but I DID have some info in wpa_supplicant.conf when I was trying with the original dhcpcd configuration, so it might be worthwhile to switch back again and see if it would actually work now.
