continuing activity light on RPI with usb boot

gday.
i have booted from a usb drive.
the RPi activity light continues giving 3 short flashes
with nothing open on the desktop.
with an SD boot the activity light is a lot less active.
does anyone know what is going on here?

All you should need to do is write the latest Raspbian Stretch image to your USB drive with Etcher, and it should work This is very good to know. hello everyone. has there been a good solution for burning an image to a USB stick and then booting that disk on RPi B+ ? i have burned my sd card contents to a 32gb stick using Etcher and Win32DiskImger but the B+ refused to boot from the usb what i get in each case is no caching mode page found as...
