GLES performance

Are OpenGL ES (1.1) based GPU transfers extremely expensive?

The reason I'm asking is that in porting my Super Play (http://superplay.info/) game engine to the Raspberry Pi I saw a jump from 1-2 fps to easily maintaining 60 fps by reducing the transfers by 3x-4x on average.

Using Netbeans through a samba share was super easy. It's a bit slow, but I was able to get my Super Play game engine (http://superplay.info/) compiled and working. Although, it will need some of work to run at full speed.
