Re: Disappearance of temperature and CPU load applets

I was looking at the installed list and somehow thinking it was an available-or-installed list. I had forgotten the "add" button. When I click there I see them, and they install just fine, even if they aren't installed by default. My apologies for my brain failure.

Re: PiHut 3D RGB Xmas Tree questions

@DougieLawson - I have taken two of your suggestions: 1. I posted an issue on github, asking for further details about Ben's software 2. I posted a support request at The PiHut, requesting that Rachel provide answers to some hardware questions. 3. I also politely requested more information from Rac...

Re: Disappearance of temperature and CPU load applets

I believe I had these installed on most if not all of my dozen Pis, all running Raspbian Buster, all updated frequently if irregularly. These applets were there for a long time, and then they weren't. I can't pinpoint just when I first noticed them being gone. I just verified that they don't appear ...

Re: Disappearance of temperature and CPU load applets

It's not that I forgot how to install them, it's that they no longer appear there as choices to install.

Disappearance of temperature and CPU load applets

I liked and installed these. Now they seem to be gone. Did I miss some announcement about them going away, am I now supposed to get to them in some new way, or did they just disappear?

Re: Image File Utilities

I was typing and submitting faster than I was thinking, and I was confused. Let me try again. In the case of a currently purely SD card based system, the images taken with your utilities could easily be restored via etcher to that or another SD card, or even to a USB stick or drive for USB booting. ...

Re: Image File Utilities

I thought of providing you with some more testing, by trying to restore any of those images I took of my 3B. But I don't think I could use etcher directly, with boot on the SD and root on the hard drive. Perhaps I would need to use etcher to write both to the SD, then use your USB booting scripts to...

Re: Several packages were removed resulting in loss of the Raspberry Pi desktop

thank you

I remember thinking "hmm, there must be some big change to the UI here...) but I figured it was intended and hit enter.

I got in the habit of always accepting updates because they had in fact always worked. I'll look closer now.

Re: Several packages were removed resulting in loss of the Raspberry Pi desktop

Doing the following and rebooting seems to have fixed things: sudo apt install raspberrypi-ui-mods The nice RPD look and feel is back. So, what happened here - how did my running normal update/upgrade commands yesterday result in removing so many packages? And what has been changed or been fixed sin...

Re: Several packages were removed resulting in loss of the Raspberry Pi desktop

Just tried the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
sudo reboot
A couple of small random libs got upgraded. No change to the Debian-look desktop. No reappearance of the Raspberry Pi Desktop.

Still up the creek, anyone at the Foundation got a paddle?

Do you find the new approach to do the initial full backup acceptable?
Your changes work for me, but I wouldn't want to be the only one with a vote.

correction and caution - i had two windows open, one showing 1024ish units, one 1000ish units.

The final sizes of the two attempts were (in units of 1000) 14615m and 15383m.

Re: Image File Utilities

@RonR- I gave the beta a try. I did hack in an exclude for the huge directory I wanted to skip. I guesstimated 130GB for that, so I could have reduced my initial size from 161954 to 31954, but I rounded up to 40,000. I guess I could have let it create the whole giant size, and then we'd really see t...

Re: Several packages were removed resulting in loss of the Raspberry Pi desktop

The loss of the usual desktop appearance just happened to me too. I did the usual just a while ago: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade && sudo apt autoremove But I didn't get the expected results! At first, before rebooting, the desktop background disappeared - I got a light grey background on...

"COBOL programmer", heck no. The first half of my career was writing mainframe assembler; the second was doing the same applications over again for servers, using C and scripting languages. If there was any structure or modularity, it was there because you imposed it, without much help from the lang...

Re: Image File Utilities

@RonR, I have a PI 3b which is booting entirely from a hard drive. There's a lot of data on the hard drive, including approximately 150GB from one specific application which I don't want it to be included in the backups I hope to take with image-backup. It would make the backup just too large, and I...

Re: PiHut 3D RGB Xmas Tree questions

Maybe my last post made it look as if, because I had lots of links, I must therefore have a lot of answers. Nope, I still have questions. Here are just a few... 1. Which GPIO pins is the new RGB tree really using, and could I just connect those instead of using the full 40-pin header? 2. If the samp...
