Re: Ubuntu 20.10 Desktop USB boot - no modifications needed

"via" is wrong because this release is preinstalled on whatever medium you choose. First time was micro-sd, which doesn't appear viable; 2nd time was a magnetic-based HD in the USB3 port - works fine and appears quite polished. I tested the Server variant, but that did not boot from USB by default a...

Re: Ubuntu 20.10 Desktop USB boot - no modifications needed

I just installed it via USB and it was much quicker! Before I used SD and it was 20 times as slow... Do Pi4s not utilize the full read/write speed of Micro SDs?

The headless config is good for VNC so you can connect the Pi to an Android screen whilst on the go - not dependent on a HDMI monitor.

Re: Ubuntu 20.10 Desktop USB boot - no modifications needed

It applies to all distros because it allows the Pi4 to boot up without a HDMI cable plugged in, otherwise it cannot work headless. I hope the graphics are configured too because that's the other thing some distro authors keep forgetting to put in the config.txt

Re: Ubuntu 20.10 Desktop USB boot - no modifications needed

Crashed the first time I installed with some var log syslog error whilst setting up the keyboard and USB storage, etc. Is there a server version we can install instead as the desktop looks quite heavy? As usual with all Pi distros the config.txt is missing this: hdmi_force_hotplug=1 EDIT: still cras...

Re: STICKY: Raspberry Pi OS (64 bit) beta test version feedback

I have my headless RPi 4 running via USB Boot, now. I used the tutorial available at Tom's Hardware. It was easy to setup with a Kingston 120 gb SSD in an Inatek enclosure. It is running straight from the USB port with no other external power without problem. Well worth the effort. Jeff But it shou...

Just rebooted my 3B+ headless and it came back up OK.
It only happens on Pi4

How to fix the mouse?

I would like to stop it gliding, and instead, just move in real time at a constant speed without any acceleration

Re: [GUIDE] Android Device as Screen for rPi via USB & VNC

Great guide.

FYI: that "USB Tethering" is easily confused with "USB Tethering" under default connection mode (previously known as RNDIS prior to Android 9), but the option we need is actually under hotspot settings instead.

Re: RPi4 HEVC (h.265) playback not possible on Raspbian?

I've not been able to fix the VLC issue - but managed to playback h.265 in several distros where the graphics acceleration was turned on in the config.txt - using the following media players:
-SMPlayer
-Dragon Player

Re: HEVC transcoding on Raspberry Pi 4 with Ubuntu

Is the hardware acceleration option to try to get more FPS during encoding - and is Handbrake likely to not be configured for that? It might be worth firing up a light GUI just to test, but ARM encoding still seems 50-100 times slower compared to Intel! And on the fastest Intel PCs one movie in H.26...

Re: Video playback issues & Ubuntu paradox (Raspberry Pi 4)

I tried 64-bit Raspbian and it plays smooth - but VLC kept crashing when closing and re-opening video. I then tried a HDMI fix in the config.txt file that someone recommended and then the taskbar panel disappeared indefinitely! Going to test Ubuntu again to compare.

Re: Video playback issues & Ubuntu paradox (Raspberry Pi 4)

OK thanks I will give the 64-bit version a try - but it's not true 64-bit right? Upon further inspection the official Ubuntu 20.04s only include the following in their config.txt: [pi4] kernel=uboot_rpi_4.bin max_framebuffers=2 [pi2] kernel=uboot_rpi_2.bin [pi3] kernel=uboot_rpi_3.bin [all] arm_64bi...

Re: Video playback issues & Ubuntu paradox (Raspberry Pi 4)

Thanks for your reply! The performance has been quite variable in different distros so I would be surprised if it were just one setting; for example, is the official Ubuntu and sakaki's Gentoo unlikely to use that same setting in their config files?

I can now confirm it's also smooth in Ubuntu Mate.

@jsciamms, how comes video playback is smoother in your download compared to the official release...? I tried SDCard for both RPI-USB-BOOT.zip and ubuntu-20.04.1-preinstalled-server-arm64+raspi.img.xz - but yours is better!! What difference might explain that? Re: Guide: Installation of *VANILLA* Debian 11 (or later) on a Raspberry Pi 4

Nice guide - but after I installed and opened VLC it could barely playback a video that works fine in Raspbian Buster! I then tried to install Kodi and found that the app isn't available in the default repository.

Is it possible to install Kodi on Gentoo?

If I'm not mistaken I believe H.265 video doesn't playback on VLC in fullscreen mode either in Gentoo or Raspbian.

However, on Raspbian Kodi can playback H.265 in fullscreen.

Is it possible to install Kodi for Gentoo (ARM64) using emerge if not by compiling it?

Problems setting static IP address

I tried setting a static IP address as follows: sudo nano /etc/dhcpcd.conf file with: interface usb0 static ip_address=192.168.42.42/24 Unfortunately, it keeps changing from 192.168.42.XXX dynamically! One thing I noticed between Raspbian and Gentoo on Pi is that the dhcpcd.conf file is empty on the...
