Re: USB Problems

To my surprise a recording volt meter on TP1 TP2 showed the 5v rail wandering between 4.766V and 4.866V dependant on CPU/GPU load while the power supply stayed rock steady at 5.04V Throwing suspicion on the usb power lead & the USB plug & socket. This is perfectly normal (though not the smartest de...

Re: Help connecting to the internet - absolute beginner

First of all, are you able to ping yourself from you Windows machine (i.e. 192.168.0.1)? I have little experience of internet sharing in Windows since I always use a router, but I've read that such problems exist.

Re: Help compiling omxplayer from the AUR

It might, but I have a fast SD card and with ethernet playback I often observe a delay of up to one second before the video starts. I don't know where the bottleneck is, perhaps in omxplayer's initialization code. Since I only use it for watching movies it has never been an issue for me.

Re: Pi Power Problems

Can you verify its function with a dummy load (6.2Ohm or as close as you can get)? If it still outputs 5V I would definitely suspect something prior to F3 since your earlier tests showed less current going into you system. EDIT: Looking at the schematics, there isn't much in front of F3 except for t...

Re: Help compiling omxplayer from the AUR

You are now allocating more ram to the gpu, which is needed when decoding high quality video. For example, H.264 uses multiple reference frames for motion prediction: When decoding, reference frames must be stored in memory until they are no longer needed for further decoding. This can considerably ...

Re: Pi Power Problems

Hmm, does not seem to be a simple short then. Interestingly you only have a drop of 140mV over F3, which corresponds to ~450mA with a typical value of 0.3Ohm for F3. This is not outside the spec and should not bring a healthy power supply to its knees. 1) What is the rating of this particular power ...

Re: Help compiling omxplayer from the AUR

The AUR tarball contains an Arch-specific Makefile which has not been updated to reflect the latest changes (subtitle support) in the Git source. The Makefile update consists of adding -std=c++0x to CFLAGS, -lfreetype and -lz to LDFLAGS as well as OMXPlayerSubtitles.cpp, SubtitleRenderer.cpp and Uni...

Re: Pi Power Problems

Sounds like a possible short circuit causing F3 to trip. What is the resistance between +5V and ground (TP1-TP2) when you unplug the supply? EDIT: For reference, I measured mine just now at 6 megaohms. This is in the same region as I am used to seeing my own PCBs. If you measure significantly less r...

Re: USB Problems

spitecho: That sounds alot like a power issue to me. When you used an illuminated (high power) keyboard, the total system current increased and hence the voltage drop over the input polyfuse F3 increased. If your power supply delivers 4.8V, and you drop 300mV over F3 (taking 600mA / 0.5Ohm as an exa...

Thank you for the detailed instructions, works like a charm! I like the way youtube-viewer prefers high definition video by default.

On Arch I used perl-libwww from extra and perl-xml-fast from aur. gcc is of course up to date already if you are a diligent pacman user ;)

So, I have a new one rated at 2.25A at 5V... same problem persists. The voltage across TP1 and TP2 is now 4.81 V... almost no difference. Please observe the difference between current and voltage. There was a problem like this I remember a month ago caused by systemd-186, I could only login as root on tty3 or tty4. This was fixed by a contemporary initscripts update. Was the pacman upgrade process interrupted half-way?

It would be nice of pacman to give some hint on why it (appears to) freeze on --init. That would spare a lot of support questions.

This is really exciting :) Will you provide packages for soft and hard float side-by-side in pacman? Will it be possible to upgrade an existing soft float system?

I can't wait to try it out and see what effect it has on decoding audio streams.
