Updating Raspbian

For a long time I've just been using sudo apt-get update -y && sudo apt-get upgrade -y to update my Pi, which is running Raspbian. I realised a little while ago that this won't upgrade it from Stretch, which is something that I need to do now. Before I do this, I need to backup the whole SD card. is...

Re: Web Server - Blocking Remote phpmyadmin

Thanks for this. That's a good reminder to get fail2ban set-up for Apache. I have disabled port forwarding until I have that in place.

Apache Update

I am running a web server on my Raspberry Pi using Apache. I have run a vulnerability scanner on my URL, and it has flagged up Apache being out of date, and having security vulnerabilities. In Apache httpd 2.2.x before 2.2.33 and 2.4.x before 2.4.26, mod_mime can read one byte past the end of a buff...

Web Server - Blocking Remote phpmyadmin

I have a web server running on my raspberry pi, and use phpmyadmin to manage the database. I have ports 80 and 443 forwarded by my router, so that the web server is accessible by IP from outside my LAN. The downside of this is that phpmyadmin can be accessed also, which doesn't seem very secure. Is ...

Re: Pi 4 - Network

Thanks for all of the very informative responses. It has certainly made my mind up that I am going to buy the RPi 4.

I'd be interested to know what potential read and write speeds might be? Say from a laptop connected via gigabit Ethernet to the same router as the Pi also connected by Ethernet.

Pi 4 - Network

I currently have a Raspberry Pi 2B+ which I have set up a Samba share on. I'm aware that both the ethernet and the USB share the same bus, which contributes to slow write speeds when transferring files across a network onto a USB attached device. I was wondering if this has changed with any of the m...

Auto Update

I have a Pi running constantly display a calendar on a screen. I want to have to interact with it as little as possible, so am looking for it to update daily by itself. Can I add the following line to the crontab? 00 02 * * * sudo apt-get update -y && sudo apt-get upgrade -y && reboot Is there anyth...

Re: Crashing

Is there something in the logs that suggests the 4TB potable HDD has caused this crash?

Re: Crashing

Yes.

It is a 'portable' drive so only gets power via one USB port, but I purchased the official power supply to hopefully overcome any power issues.

Crashing

Have had my 2B+ running for about 6-9 months without really any problems. Had a few problems accessing it remotely over the last two weeks, and today it froze completely. The logs seem to suggest at 02:21:55 this morning. I have copied and pasted all of the messages log file. Does anyone have any in...

Re: Won't boot (have read sticky)

Also, just to say that I don't have a power meter to test the board with. If I can get my hands on one I'll give it a go, but for the cost of buying one I feel better off just replacing the Pi.

Won't boot (have read sticky)

After swapping SD cards to try out a fresh install my Pi 3B+ will not boot from either the original (working) SD or the newer SD which I've just flashed the latest image onto using Etcher. It doesn't matter whether there is an SD card present or not, the red power light comes on but the green ACT li...

I previously had my (very old) HP LaserJet P1005 running great with my Pi, including AirPrint and Chrome cloud printing functioning. After a fresh OS install I messed up the install of the printer. The advice I received at the time on the forum was to have another fresh install and then follow thes...

Re: HP LaserJet P1005

I honestly cannot remember  but do you have to run a ‘hp-setup’ command before setting the printer up? It may be worth running man hp-setup to see if that gives a clue. Thanks, I will check this out. I'm equally frustrated, as I know it worked so well before. I had just tried so many differen...

I accessed my headless Pi via VNC and twice over the last 18 months it's been completely inaccessible and I've needed to power it off at the wall. Unfortunately both of these occasions have come within the last fortnight, which makes me suspect that something has changed / gone wrong. I've searched ...

Restart on Crash

I have my 3B+ running 24/7 as a home server, which I can access from outside my network also when I need to. I've had a Pi running constantly for 18 months and have only had one crash which has led to me needing to pull the plug, and luckily I was home to do it. Is there anything I can do in terms o...

Re: Jessie backports 404

Sorry, I've gone away and done a bit of research, but don't think I fully understand. Essentially, for 99% of users, it makes sense to remove this, as they are just running the latest version which is Stretch? Does that sound right? And if so, knowing that I'm running Stretch, are there any possible...

Drive Spin Down

I have my Pi running as a home server, with a USB HDD attached. Until recently the drive would only burst into life when I was actively using it, and the rest of the time it was being powered down by hd-idle. I guess that the first thing I need to do it to find out what is waking the drive up. What ...
