I've just done another install of PHPMyadmin following Ste Wrights tutorial and it worked straight away with no messing about with alias etc.

This one is for Apache2 though not Nginx.

I got it going yesterday, you need to add an alias to the apache config as well as create a new user in Maria. By default PHPMyAdmin will disallow you to login using the root login. You forgot about the netmask... if you don't specify one it defaults to 255.0.0.0 which will obviously mess things up a bit if you are on a different subnet to the pi.
