A general script, which takes input from fdisk of the source disk will be a good addition to the Pi tools.
There are some tools like that, see https://robotzero.one/headless-pi-zero-backup-clone/
Thanks . That's really helpful.

Re: Pi image, can I skip image of empty partition?

Thank you. I understand. It will be a challenge to dd partitions from a device with 32 gb capacity to a 16 gb capacity. Of course the boot and root partitions total is less than 16gb.

You are mistaken Jessie went end of life 2 years ago, Stretch became end of life 2 months ago and now we have Buster: https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/ I am sorry. You are right, the edition I had downloaded is indeed Buster. I checked the .zip and .img file names. Having established ...

Re: Buster after resize of /root and adding a partition cant boot.

I edited the cmdline.txt in boot partition to match the uuid of sdb2. You also need to edit /etc/fstab with any changes (new partition and PARTUUID). If you are installing Raspbian Buster with Desktop, you could boot up the default configuration, install Gparted and edit the partitions in Raspbian....

Yes running Jessie is unwise. You could remove the init=... and quiet options from bootcmd.txt and try again. So bootcmd.txt should be ? dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=serial0,115200 console=tty1 root=PARTUUID=e728a658-02 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline fsck.repair=yes rootwaitsplash plymouth.ignor...

You sound be able to do so but it really depends on the stick itself. I’ve used HP sticks with licence keys in servers for moths with no issues before today - these were fitted in the server case and got hot... I would use a small hard drive to be honest if it was me as I find them more reliable lo...
