Re: Configuring dhcpcd in Raspbian Stretch

This is what I see - Mac and Pi connected to same Wifi but dhcpcd on Pi is configured in different network. Mac (10.0.0.146) can resolve Pi.local ip correctly (192.168.3.14) but cannot ping/ssh to Pi. HOWEVER, previously connected VNC session on Mac (originally created when both Mac and Pi were on 1...

Re: Configuring dhcpcd in Raspbian Stretch

Correct. "Connect PiZW to the internet" was a poor choice of words. That's what I was attempting to do when I saw the strange IP issue. But you're right the Pi did not have a gateway or DNS. It was however accessible on the 10.0.0.255 LAN despite some parts of the OS thinking it was still at 192.168...

Re: Configuring dhcpcd in Raspbian Stretch

When the access point is up and running and I do hostname -I, the IP is different to the static IP defined in dhcpcd.conf? I expected the static IP defined in dhcpcd.conf would be the access point IP? I saw something similar, when I did things in the opposite direction: 1. Boot PiZW into access poi...

Re: Configuring dhcpcd in Raspbian Stretch

Actually, just checked the wpa_supplicant hook for dhcpcd, and it will try to load a wpa_supplicant.conf file named /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant-"$interface".conf first. So, you can configure everything without switching to ifupdown. Nice. Very useful info to have for this issue, and in gener...

Re: Configuring dhcpcd in Raspbian Stretch

You may need to figure out how to tweak wpa_supplicant (the program, not config file) to only consider your internet-connected wlan interface and not touch the AP interface. Not sure how to do that but it should be possible once you figure out how init calls that. The manpage indicates that wpa_supp...

Re: Configuring dhcpcd in Raspbian Stretch

I've successfully built the AP on a Pi Zero W with Stretch now. Thanks to SurferTim for the advice. It seems that wpa_supplicant.conf needs to have the default contents and in particular no networks defined. dhcpcd looks carefully at this file, I believe due to hooks in the new GUI and CLI interface...

Re: Can't get static IP to work

Well put. Predictable is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. To me, predictable is when a system with one NIC in it (most systems) has eth0 to configure. Not enx with 12 characters of essentially random hexadecimal after it. Have you had to type one of these things at the CLI yet? I have.

That's why it should be a raspi-config option with a sensible default setting.

Re: Can't get static IP to work

I want fixed addresses regardless of which DHCP server is assigning things (and my old ADSL2 router didn't have that feature). I like the dhcpcd.conf way of doing things - I just don't know why the RPF/RPT folks have chosen to do it that way and not the Arch Linux way. That's fine, but you have to ...

Re: Can't get static IP to work

For me the predictable interface names is a "Good Thing™" as it's going to make building a single SDCard for fourteen Raspberries possible with a unified /etc/dhcpcd.conf to assign the static IP addresses to each one Huh? Just stick the mac addresses in your DHCP server and you're done. We've been ...

Re: Configuring dhcpcd in Raspbian Stretch

Thank you that clears it up. I did a headless setup where you put wpa_supplicant.conf and a file called ssh in the /boot directory before installing the sd card and performing first boot on the pi. First boot then puts your /boot/supplicant.conf into /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, thus blo...

Re: Can't get static IP to work

Are you using the new Raspbian Stretch (Latest since August 17) or Raspbian Jessie (prior to August 17)? As Dougie mentions, the new system assigns ethernet device IDs in a dramatically different way. For ethernet devices it appends the hardware MAC address of the device to the new "enx" root device...

Re: Access point on Raspberry Zero W

Make sure you are using Raspbian Jessie, then the tutorial that Dougie linked above will work straight away on the Pi Zero W (up to but not including the section "USING THE RASPBERRY PI AS AN ACCESS POINT TO SHARE AN INTERNET CONNECTION"). Took me 20 minutes start to finish. The existing tutorials d...

Re: Configuring dhcpcd in Raspbian Stretch

Interfaces was stock, untouched from the Stretch install. Everything else was as you posted above with the exception of wpa_supplicant.conf (which I don't think you mentioned). There were complaints about wpa_supplicant in the dhcpcd syslog output. Not sure precisely what went wrong but I suspect th...

Re: Configuring dhcpcd in Raspbian Stretch

I've created a new AP on Pi Zero W with hostapd/dnsmasq working under Jessie in under 20 minutes start to finish. I'm going on three hours with Stretch and cannot for the life of me figure it out. How does wpa_supplicant.conf play into all this? dhcpcd is barking about that file but I'm not setting ...
