Re: Updated 64-bit Gentoo Image for RPi3 Released (now also for RPI3B+)

Solid924,

Apologies for the delay in replying, I am currently travelling with only very intermittent internet access, and will respond on my return (last week of August).

In the meantime, please post a topic on the ARM subforum of the Gentoo board for support.

Best,

Re: Kernel updating

Hi Gavinmc42, while you can indeed update your kernel manually from the weekly-autobuild tarball as you describe, the default way to do it is to rely on the corresponding ebuilds. There are two of these, sys-kernel/bcmrpi3-kernel-bin (for bcmrpi3-kernel ) and sys-kernel/bcmrpi3-kernel-bis-bin (for b...

Re: Updated 64-bit Gentoo Image for RPi3 Released (now also for RPI3B+)

Not all Pi2 manufacture uses the bcm2837, some are still made with the bcm2836. Hmm that could be confusing if I needed a lower power WiFi-less 64bit Pi ;) BCM2836 rev 1.1 , BCM2837 rev 1.2? Yes, afaik the rev 1.2 RPi2 has a 64-bit-capable SoC , whereas the earlier revs do not. I have been informed...

Looks good, can you write an ebuild for it (b4a) and then file it as a PR on the rpi3-overlay?

The v1.2.2 release mentioned above is now available for installation via PINN as well (thanks to procount for this).

As before, the standard image is called "gentoo64" in PINN; and the Pi-Top variant "gentoo64pt".

Is Blender available on Gentoo64? media-gfx/blender is available in the Gentoo tree, however it is not currently keyworded for arm64, as you can see by using eix: pi64 ~ # eix --exact --verbose blender * media-gfx/blender Available versions: *2.72b-r4 ~*2.79 *2.79-r1 IUSE (all versions): +boost +bu...

This is awesome, thanks, (and i regret not registering as nyamo now) is anyone compiling on a higher powered machine and then sending their binaries to the Pi? Just curious how people are compiling if this is how anyone is doing it. (or are you all compiling everything within the pi?) nes_pi (sense...

Hello, I've just posted a v1.2.2 release of my bootable 64-bit Gentoo image for the RPi3 (model B and B+) on GitHub ( here , includes full download instructions). A changelog from the prior release image (with upgrade instructions) may be viewed here , but in summary: Migrated the default binary ker...

Re: Status of Wayland/Weston?

As with Unix itself, X was designed by good people who assumed that everyone using the system was also good. It's really a shame that this no assumption no longer holds. It's what happens when they decided to market it to the masses. Or to quote the always-quoteable Joanna Rutkowska : There certain...

ejolson, 1. Reinvent the wheel. Normally I would think that is what is going on with this Wayland/Weston thing. Except a while back I saw a presentation by a Wayland/Weston developer who was actually an old hand X11 developer. He talked about removing a lot of X11 cruft that nobody uses anymore. He...

Re: How to install and run 32-bit Raspbian apps on 64-bit Gentoo (RPi3 B/B+)

Yes, it works: https://github.com/sakaki-/resources/raw/master/raspberrypi/pi3/mathematica_in_gentoo_chroot.png To get this to run, I followed the instructions cited above , but used the full Raspbian as a "donor" image (and made sure to start Mathematica once within that image booted natively first...

Re: KVM on rasberry pi 3

ravishanakar, if you are targetting a 3B (as opposed to a 3B+), then you could also use the default aarch64 archlinuxarm rootfs tarball , which ships with KVM enabled in its kernel. You can download and write it to an unused microSD card using e.g. this script ; then see e.g. this post for QEMU setu...

Re: Wow, sweet 64

Rebooting didn't make LXDE's CPU Freq Frontend work, I'm not sure what the CPU's doing. The methods for checking that under Raspbian mostly don't work here. But looking seriously at https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv8/broadcom/raspberry-pi-3. I'm expecting another blank SD in a day or two. If ...

Re: Wow, sweet 64

Well, that brings up a big can of worms. I broke my Gentoo by removing PAM, Apparmor, Selinux. The gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit image does not ship with apparmor or selinux installed by default (although it does have pam). The list of installed packages (with versions) may be reviewed here . Also, if you'r...

ab1jx, many thanks for posting the benchmarks and build details, they were really useful. So, I've now created an initial cut of the cpuminer-multi ebuild ( commit , based on the existing cpuminer-opt ebuild) and tested it on an RPi3B+ using the gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit image. The system is in a Flirc c...

Now I'm running cpuminer-multi on 1 thread and it went from about 3.15 kH/s (32 bit) to 4.13 - 4.25 kH/s (64 bit). Hi ab1jx, By coincidence, I'm working on an ebuild of cpuminer-multi for the gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit image at the moment, because of a user request. As such, would you mind posting some b...

Yes. Fixes for some other lan78xx stuff have already been committed, but afaik changes addressing the above two issues have not yet landed in tree.

Wow Sakaki, Am I right that this could speed up porting 32bit stuff to Aarch64 Pi's? Yes, absolutely, for example I built 64-bit firefox-59.0.2 that way yesterday for the RPi3, in 1 hr 44 mins from source (just pushed to the binhost, btw). That's more than an order of magnitude faster than building...

Emerging aarch64 rust-1.25.0 for RPi3, via QEMU PC chroot (tutorial)

Hello, To get aarch64 rust-1.25.0 to build for my gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit project's binhost recently, I had to resort to emerging in a user-mode QEMU binfmt_misc chroot on my PC (it now isn't really feasible to build this natively on an RPi3, as it needs over 3GiB of swap (and isn't distcc-friendly), s...
