Re: Run Raspbian on Raspberry Pi 4 64bits kernel

Thanks Sakaki. So the bottom line is running Raspbian with a 32-bit userspace and a 64-bit kernel should be possible (but needs some hard work). Indeed. And actually on the RPi3 you don't even need any nerd work for this particular target: I have a prebuilt, bootable image with a 32-bit Raspbian (S...

Re: Run Raspbian on Raspberry Pi 4 64bits kernel

I assume that'll work for the RPI3B, 3B+ & 3A that are all 64-bit capable (as demostrated with Sakaki's Gentoo64)? Hi Dougie, The issue agherzan is addressing in his (very nice) guide, is how to get the Pi 4 booting in 64-bit mode, and further how to convert an existing 32-bit image (Raspbian Buste...

@sakaki could you share your kernel build full config file please? OK so in fact, for convenience, I've just uploaded a mini-tarball of the necessary files to get a 64-bit boot on a Pi4 (modulo all the current caveats and health warnings that attach to that). You can use it to easily adapt an exist...

Details here.

Re: 64-bit Gentoo Running on RPi4! (First Boot / Proof of Concept)

If you have time, I would be very happy if you downloaded a copy of my pichart program, compiled it for 64-bit ARM and then ran it on the 4B. Although there is a regression I'm currently tracking down regarding the performance of merge sort, having 64-bit runs on the new hardware would definitely b...

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to 64Bit on the Pi4. I have a very hacked-up, proof-of-concept version of 64-bit Gentoo running on a Pi4 now ^-^ Please see this post for further details. 64-bit Gentoo Running on RPi4! (First Boot / Proof of Concept)

Hello, so, this is very rough round the edges, and not even close to being ready for prime-time yet, but... I have 64-bit Gentoo running on my (4GiB*) Pi4! Screenshot: https://github.com/sakaki-/resources/raw/master/raspberrypi/pi4/rpi4-gentoo-screenshot2.jpg Some details. This is using a vanilla bc...

Re: Are there any ways of using ARM64 applications on the Pi 4 yet?

... Whilst we are not likely to release a 64bit Raspbian in the near future, a number of others will release fairly quickly. Sakaki's build of Gentoo for one. It's hopefully a fairly easy fix. The current blocker for a (native) 64-bit OS is the availability of a viable 64-bit kernel. ATM the 4.19.y...

@Sakaki Do you plan on getting hold of a Pi 4 and making an autobuild project based on the bcm2711_defconfig ? I always find your project so useful on arch when I’m not building the kernel myself :) Hi jimbojones, yes, I have a couple of Pi4s now, and have also cross-compiled the current 4.19.y bcm...

I have been having trouble with 1.4.2 but it could be the cards or Etcher or even Win10. Need to try writing cards on Linux box, just have not had time to track down the issue. Did you get your issue with 1.4.2 resolved? I've double-checked that the version available for download on GitHub boots OK...

The v1.4.2 gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit image is now also available for install through PINN (called gentoo64 - and, for the PiTop v1 variant, gentoo64pt - there).

Just that pesky new Pi4 to port to now ^-^

LittleMike, in principle this technique should be usable with an x86 (or x86_64) guest linux image, running under an x86 (or x86_64) host linux system, such as the Debian with Raspberry Pi Desktop OS, for example. @sakai Thanks for this. I needed a 64 bit userland for a go project and finally found this after fumbling around with Ubuntu and other arm64 options for the pi. Literally nothing out there is as lean as raspbian and in the absence of a native 64 bit option, this is by far the best option. I am gett...

Hi Botspot, firstly, apologies for the delay in responding, I have been travelling. As to your question, systemd-nspawn lies roughly in the system virualization spectrum between a guest OS chroot, and a full-blown KVM approach. Unlike KVM, when booted under systemd-nspawn the (>=1) guest OS shares a...

Hi ShiftPlusOne, just a quick heads-up on this. I have now pretty much finished testing the Debian Buster 64-bit container locally, and it all seems to work pretty much as expected. I assume we should target this rather than Stretch for the production release, as it will soon be the stable variant? ...

crocket, I appreciate you're not using my gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit image, rather building out your own Gentoo system from scratch, but you may want to take a quick look at the rpi3-overlay used by my project; there are a number of 'fixups' for the RPi3 B/B+ (working around Ethernet glitches on B+, WM co...
