It would seem that somehow the wireless keyboard I was using was stopping the pi from seeing usb sticks, strange but it seems to work now with a wired keyboard/mouse attached.

Yes I have tried, but been unsuccessful in installing github for it, as the download fails every time, though I need to attempt to install it as .tar. I'll give it a go tomorrow.
Are there any other alternatives as a simple music player however?
