I had a similar problem with mine when i first started, the solution was to change my router from WPA/WPA2 Personal to Mixed WPA/WPA2 and it finally connected.

Out of sheer curiosity today i was troubleshooting my peripherals i tryed my 5v 1A PowerGen power supply that i got for 5 bucks and tryed the micro USB cable that i got from bestbuy (rocketfish brand) it's their normal USB to microUSB cable to no avail recieved the same error message with sudo iwlis...

Just an update, i already have the wpasupplicant installed as well and whenever i start up the GUI with startx the gnome network manager loads and ethernet works fine when booting up or in the startx GUI but i get no managed devices for the wireless dongle. I am curious as to why it still wont work ...
