starting omxplayer in .profile

i would like to start omxplayer automatically after booting. so i have put it into .profile and it works fine but i also need to be able to quit it with esc. why doesn't this work if i put stuff in .profile? how can i achieve this in a non-complicated way? :)

Re: HDMI splitter?

@Aydan: oh! i see! i misunderstood the gadget setup.

@aBUGSworstnightmare: sorry, i was refering to Aydan's post.

@DavidS: it's not only a presentation of still images. it should be video with 25fps. but i will look into the SPI nevertheless. thanks!

Re: HDMI splitter?

thanks! the piwall project sounds interesting too.

about that gadget thing... are you sure this would work with a raspberry pi 3 as gadget and zeros as "clients"? since in all tutorials i saw it was the other way around and the zero always was the gadget?

Re: HDMI splitter?

price isn't my primary concern. i would like to avoid having to deal with 20 (or so) sdcards and linux installations. :) any other ideas to make this more convenient? net booting doesn't work with pi zeros right?

(i think at the pihut you can order 2 pi zeros per order (one pi zero + one pi zero w).)

HDMI splitter?

i am doing an art project where i need to display videos on a lot of small screens. i was thinking of waveshare 5" screens with a resolution of 800x480 for example. i would like to avoid having to use one raspberry pi per screen though since that would be quite cumbersome. does anyone know if there ...

Re: issue with waveshare screens

i don't think that's the issue. i made the correct settings in config.txt according to the waveshare wiki. and if i turn on the screen before the raspberry pi it reliably works. the problem just arises if i power it from the raspberry pi's usb. then the start up order seems to be a bit random and so...

issue with waveshare screens

i use various kinds of waveshare screens for my projects. there is one problem though. i think the raspberry pi requires that the screen is switched on before itself gets switched on so that it can recognize it. but i would like to power the screens from the raspberry pi usb so that only one power s...

Re: strange behaviour when turning on raspberry pi with a relay

it's a 5" waveshare display connected per hdmi. yes, the display has a second micro usb port which is supposed to power the raspberry pi but this didn't work reliably for me. it only seems to work reliably if the display has power before the raspberry pi. (i also know this behaviour from my other me...

strange behaviour when turning on raspberry pi with a relay

for an art installation i use a raspberry pi with a 5" hdmi screen. it seems like the raspberry pi doesn't recognize the screen if it doesn't get turned on before the raspberry pi. so to make this fool proof i used a relay which turns on the raspberry pi a few seconds after the screen. it seems to w...

I'm not sure what you mean by "stuff just gets copy&pasted thousands or millions of times". Nobody designs like that. Hardware or software.
what i meant is that chips can have a billion transistors but a lot of this number can be things that repeat a lot, like sram cells.

Common ratio - 1 hardware guy needs 5-10 software guys :o interesting. yes, that's the kind of picture i get. :) What kind of hardware are you talking about? Or what kind of software for that matter? mostly i was thinking about designing cpus and gpus. so actually hardware = software (kind of) in t...

is software harder than hardware? :)

are big software projects more complex nowadays or harder to do than hardware projects? sometimes i get the impression... it seems to be the case with the raspberry pi project itself (i think they underestimated the software part at the beginning? wayland, opengl driver,...) and also with the raspbe...

Re: Are all PI 3 model B prone to overheating?

what kind of videos do you play and what player software do you use?

in my experience only the arm cores tend to get hot. the videocore seems to stay pretty cool for me when playing h264 videos with omxplayer.

yes, i sometimes use it for that.

but the limitation to 1gb ram requires some discipline. you can't have many browser tabs and applications open at the same time.

Re: any news yet on the PI3A??

i think the problem with the a3 is the 25$ price target. :) it makes sense to include wifi/bt. so that's 5$ (as we see with the pi zero w). it will be a pi 3 so there will be the quad core cpu and that almost requires 1gb ram? so the only difference to the b3 would be the usb chip and the additional...

yes, with kodi i actually meant libreelec. i always mix this up.

...

the good thing is that most movies aren't 16:9 but something like 2.39:1. so 1080p actually is more like 800p. less work for the raspberry pi. :)
