Re: Libreoffice Spellcheck

Thank you, this helped me too. I'm testing using a Pi 3 as a travel computer, and was surprised to see that LibreOffice wasn't able to detect spelling errors. This solved the problem.

Re: No keyboard input in Super Crate Box etc.

I filed a bug report with YoYo Games before posting here. :) Figured someone else here might have run into the same bug, worth a shot. I've received a polite response from YoYo Games that they're going to be looking into it, but it might be a few days. If they can provide a solution, I'll post it in...

No keyboard input in Super Crate Box etc.

I've been setting up a Pi 3 with a fresh install via BerryBoot (installed to a hard drive), and I've started looking at more recent games. I downloaded all three of the GameMaker games that were recently released for free for the Pi, and with all three I've immediately run into the same showstopping...

Re: Vagrant and Virtualbox

No, the .deb packages you downloaded are for a different processor architecture (x86/AMD64). The Pi family use ARM processors, and packages need to be compiled for ARM instead. For a lot of open-source software you can attempt to compile the software yourself from source (not hard, just potentially ...

FocusWriter is in the repositories and will handle RTF files just fine. I've used it on the Pi B, it runs very well.

Re: Need Help - Setting up Hulu, HBO GO, Amazon Instant, ect

The web program "DIY Tryin" just did a program that outlines how to do what you're looking for: http://revision3.com/diytryin/build-a-raspberry-pi-home-theater-pc-plays-netflix/ Because devices like the Raspberry Pi are locked out of Netflix, Amazon Instant and other programs, you do need to have a ...

Re: Calibre on Raspberry Pi

given how slow calibre is on my 3.2ghz quad core with ssd, i expect it would take ten minutes to even start up on a pi+sdcard you really have to be realistic about the limitations of the pi, its not a general purpose pc. Odd, works fine on my dual core 2GHz 2GB HD Ubuntu PC. Yes, I'm confused by th...

Re: Compatible NAS drive? advice required.

I can recommend a Synology NAS as well. A few months ago I bought a refurbished DS110j (single bay) off Amazon and I've been very pleased. The installation process and user interface are excellent, there are a lot of options and capabilities available to you, and it's very easy to set up for NFS sha...

Re: A GUI player for MP3s?

Yes, it's just

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install vlc
to install it. Works from both the command line and in the GUI. As said above, though, it only works for music on the Pi at the moment.

I seem to remember the original Monkey Island was a scumm game. This may be wishfull thinking. ;) Lots of scummvm games out there. I just tested Monkey Island 1 and 2, and they both work ok. Some games are free to download from the scummvm homepage, like druscula and lure of the temptress. Monkey i...

Re: No sound over HDMI or analogue jack

Well I don't know. Some programs try to autodetect where to output sound and some don't. Open a terminal and try this, enter 'sudo amixer cset numid=3 N' where N is a number and N can take the values 0=auto 1=analog 2=hdmi. You can use this to force sound to a particular output. So 'sudo amixer cse...

Re: 1200 x 1600 pixels video mp4 codec

I've used omxplayer to play back 720p 100 fps and 1080p 30 fps MKV files, no problem whatsoever. 1600x1200 is a slightly larger picture, but it might still be doable. What's the frame rate?

Re: What do you guys install to see videos - Flash - Html5

There's no Flash for the Raspberry Pi, so you won't be able to watch videos in the browser itself. However, I use youtube-dl to download the videos themselves, and then they play just fine with omxplayer.

Yeah, I know you don't need to have to be in X in order to use Dosbox.

Still need to find time to start testing games.

Re: Dosbox. What have you got running.

I have a ton of old DOS games that I've purchased through GOG.com over the past few years. I hadn't even thought about running them on the Pi before. I'll give this a shot when I have a spare moment. Are there any command-line frontends for Dosbox? I quite like using them in a GUI, but I'm spending ...

Re: [Howto] Redirect X over SSH to other PC

If you want to start another X server on linux, you can also specify the tty: xinit -- vt8 :1 starts XServer :1 on tty8 (Ctrl-alt-F8) just make sure beforehand that tty is "empty" i.e. there's no getty asking for a login prompt or syslog dumping messages there. PS: has anyone tried my method ? I ju...

I just tried sudo xinit -- :1 & in a terminal emulator window and a virtual terminal, and "Ctrl + Alt + F8" just gives a black screen with a blinking cursor. (This is on Ubuntu 11.10.) I haven't got a Pi to plug in, but presumably that's not a requirement for starting a second X server... On Ubuntu...

Re: [Howto] Redirect X over SSH to other PC

You may be confusing virtual console numbers, tty N , with X display numbers, : N . My apologies for any confusion, I'm just learning this stuff. It should not be necessary to stop gdm before starting another X server with an ssh-tunnelled session. But if you have more than one X server already run...

Bratkartoffel and others, thank you very much for posting this set of instructions. I would like to make a minor addendum: this didn't work off the bat for me, when I was attempting to forward the LXDE desktop to my laptop computer as a second session on tty1. I'd never get anything other than a bla...
