Actually `sudo bash` should be avoided, so my answer should have been `sudo passwd root`. The whole point of sudo is to only execute particular commands as root in order to avoid trouble. I am using it that way because 90% of what I'm doing requires root so adding sudo every time is irritating. /etc...

I had the same problem with network errors under xwindows. Everything worked fine under the text console.
