Re: Monitor

Could you please let me know if a monitor without an HDMI port can be used with a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, as a display?
If you have a VGA monitor, you can use it via a HDMI to VGA adapter.

Re: Simon Long appreciation

I may have moaned at first sight of the needed new cables etc, but I now see it as a completely new line of computer board, & will be getting a 4GB model when they become available, so, yes, I do appreciate all your, & the teams, hard work to bring us the new RPi. Sorry if you found my first comment...

Re: Why is the RPi4 being advertised as a desktop computer?

Another attribute for a desktop computer is how quiet it is, & the RPi scores there, my latest 'real' desktop runs silently, very much quieter than most of my laptops even. :D

Re: Seeking recommendations for USB 3 to SATA

I've used the circuit board out of a dock to power my external 3.5" disks, may be a good solution for your use case, the size of the circuit board was about 4" x 1.5". I ripped it out of a Novatech dock, about £12 with power supply. ;) Mine is an older USB2 model, this is the USB3 replacement, looks...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 Thread - general discussion

With 4GB, running a distro from ram is going to be quite feasible, & that is the fastest way I know to use a computer, so anyone saying the RPi is slow should try it. 8-)

Re: Why is the RPi4 being advertised as a desktop computer?

I wonder how the OP thinks a desktop computer can't be powered by a different processor, in the old days, MACs used a different processor, & they were used as desktops & workstations, would s/he consider a workstation as not a desktop computer also(?). Presently, desktops are mainly powered by...

Re: Raspi 4 - USB power out and USB drives

With the right USB to SATA cable, my RPi3B can boot from a SSD.
I've run external 2.5" disks attached via USB, booted from micro SDHC card &/or pendrive.
But need a self powered 3.5" external drive, to be able to boot from it.

I think you may have under estmated the call for the 4GB version - it'll be the prime one for a desktop - most people will buy it because we all know how software continually grows in size. 8-)

Re: Pi 4 B as a DAW? Digital audio workstation?

My usage was simple - I think I've done it on both my Acer AO722, (dual 1GHz C6(?) processor), & more recently on my HP-G62 with a first generation Intel i3 2.13GHz processor - never saw any delay when recording, so I expect it to work on a 4GB RPi4 with quad core 1.5GHz processor. 8-)

Probably, if using a USB adapter - there are no sockets on the RPi boards.

Re: Pi 4 B as a DAW? Digital audio workstation?

I use audacity to record simple stuff on low powered laptops, using a USB mic, so I guess that would likely work on one of the soon to be available RPi4B 4GB units.

(My laptops only have 2GB ram.)

Re: (pi4) so how fast is 'entry level pc performance'

I've used both RPi3B & 3B+ as desktop replacements, mainly web browsing & music, a bit slow for video playback, owing to lack of ram, I think.

So, if you get a 4GB RPi4, it should be pretty much the equivalent of a basic computer running MS O/S.

Will get a 4GB RPi4 when they are (back ?) in stock - by then, hopefully it will be able to boot from USB3 SSD - & that should make for a decent desktop replacement. 8-)

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 Thread - general discussion

Ok, from what I've read so far.....

It doesn't boot from USB
It doesn't boot from the network
So, it only boots from micro SDHC cards

It needs a different PSU, (using a different plug/socket)
It needs micro HTML cables
It needs a different case

Sounds like you may be just seeing the DOS partition - likely you are using MS Windows, which can't 'see' Linux partitions, (without extra software).

Tiny Core Linux is maybe your best bet, but it isn't an easy system to set up for a beginner.

Otherwise, Raspbian Lite, & remove what you don't need.

I'm thinking that you set it up to access one wifi point, & now you need it to access a different wifi point, so you likely need to enter the ESSID & password of the second wifi point.

Kano OS
That is a Debian based system, (as is SkoleLinux), so you will likely find what you want in their repositories.

https://packages.debian.org/stable/

You will just need to make sure it has been compiled to run on ARM.
