Re: Prepare SD card in a virtual machine?

I think it would likely be more trouble to try to do it in a virtual machine, use a USB card reader/writer, if you don't have a card slot on your computer.

Re: Rasp 3B+ 3.3V Suddenly stoped

I've been keeping an eye on this subject, as I have a 3B+ too - & am wondering if all these dying 3B+ came from the same manufacturer, perhaps they had a dodgy run. :?:

Fair enough. :D

I only use dd myself, so thought balenaEtcher may be something different from the recommended Etcher. 8-)

Check the card slider hasn't moved to the lock position accidentally.
Ensure no partition on the card is mounted.
Remove & re insert the card, ensure the right designation, recheck the above, & try again.

Re: Rpi 3 b+. Boot from USB not working. Do I have a defective device?

Are your USB3 pendrives backwards compatible to USB2?
I've written them also through balenaEtcher and Win32DiskImager.
Neither of these are recommended, so may not work correctly.

(I can image my USB2 pendrives & micro SDHC cards, using dd, & run Raspbian, using the official 5v 2.5A PSU.)

Re: Future of the Raspberry Desktop

One reason to stick with using a window manager, rather than a desktop environment, is size, but also speed will come into it, & maybe even ease of configuration. Anyone can add whatever they want, if it's in the repos, so the best option is to keep the basic distro as lightweight as possible so tha...

I haven't read the whole thread, but, My own intention is to use a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B as a small desktop computer I use Eyoyo HTML monitors, I have an 8" SVGA 800x600, a 10" XGA 1024x768 (my favourite size, actually connected to my Intel SOC desktop & RPi3B+ via an adapter cable), & a 11.6" WXGA...

Also, did you use the card copier program supplied with Raspbian, or some outside method to create your pendrive image.

(I use the card copier with my pendrives OK.)

Re: Music player

You can't take your RPi walkabout unless you have a power source, but as an audio player, my RPi3B/3B+/3A+ work well.

Mine play mainly through built in speakers on my monitors, but I can plug in headphones too.

Re: Mystery - dead SD cards - wtf, whodunnit?

Try new cards, & see if it happens again - may just be the cards are too old to work reliably.

Edit: As above, maybe better to use a SSD or an M2-SSD.

Raspbian is based on Debian - if you want source code, I'd suggest looking on their web site, (under ARM), you may find what you are looking for - else, can you explain in more detail what code exactly you are looking for. 8-)

Re: Booting from SSD

Only the 3B with the OTP bit set, & the 3B+, (3A+ also), will boot directly from USB. (Previous models need a card with some boot files on it.) If yours is a 3B/3B+, then you should be able to just image the disk with Raspbian, attach it & boot, however, it can depend on the adapter in use. (I had t...

I use a wireless mini keyboard/touchpad unit (cost about £9) to control my RPi3A+, as I too found that a keyboard & mouse on a USB hub were drawing too much power, & wouldn't work together. 8-)

If it just blinks at a steady rate, I think it is just the USB sub system checking to see if it is attached to anything.

Using a standard 5V 2.5A power supply
That could be your problem, if it's not the recommended RPi power supply, as not all PSU give a constant 5v.
