Re: SSH speed limit?

What command are you using to do the copy? The command doesn't matter, as ssh is the bottleneck. As a quick example, which eliminates the network and disk drive, do the following: dd if=/dev/zero bs=1K count=1M |ssh localhost 'dd of=/dev/null' This will send 1 GB through the loopback connection, an...

SSH speed limit?

I've been experimenting with using a RPi 4 as a backup server, hoping to take advantage of the improved network and USB 3 speeds. The problem is I'm running into a bottleneck with SSH. I can only achieve about 40 MBPS, and top shows that ssh is taking 100% cpu. I used to be able to get around this o...

Re: PI 4, USB keeps resetting with external HDD

Ok, I found a 1TB Seagate Goflex drive, which works perfectly. So far the only one I'm having an issue with (after trying several other drives) is the Seagate 4TB Backup Plus. It works on my laptop, so I can recover data from it, but I'm going to assume that there is either an incompatibility or som...

PI 4, USB keeps resetting with external HDD

How much power is available on the USB 3 ports (assuming I'm using the official power supply), and is it enough to power most spinning rust 2.5 inch hard drives? I have a slightly older Seagate 4TB portable drive that works initially, but as soon as I start syncing files to it the USB port keeps res...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 usb boot?

If you don't mind using the SD card for an initial boot loader, you can run the OS off a USB drive. Just edit the cmdline.txt in /boot, and add "init=/sbin/usbroot.sh", rsync the OS from the SD card to the usb drive, then create a script "/sbin/usbroot.sh" that mounts the usb, runs pivot_root, and t...

Special purpose MP3 player/ripper project

I've got a project that I was about to start (kind of a continuation of something I did almost 2 decades ago). My Mom's 5-disk CD changer went out, and she looking to get a new one. I've suggested using an MP3 player instead, however this require for her to rip her entire CD collection at the comput...
