Re: Is the RPi "just" an educational tool ?

The biggest limitation at the moment is not processor or IO speed but RAM (just open a few web pages with chromium and it will slow down while swapping). . Would something like zRam help here? https://github.com/novaspirit/rpi_zram For compiling on a RPi it was a big success: https://www.youtube.co...

Re: Raspbian Jessie (64bit) for RPi3?

I understand that backward compatibility is very important Only to those people who looks backwards. To people who look forwards 32bits is not the future. Well how much penetration does RPF have in the Education market? Mainly UK and early adopters in other countries. <0.1% of world schools? How ma...

Re: Is the RPi "just" an educational tool ?

Whether educationally beneficial or not, we already accept that anything which sells more Pi helps the RPF goals in generating more revenue, as with the CM range. "Educational benefit" may not be the be all and end all of reasons to add features to the Pi, but having an educational benefit certainl...

Re: Is the RPi "just" an educational tool ?

The Raspberry Pi boards are not "educational tools" at all, at least not by themselves. They are simply a range of fully usable small computer boards (SBCs) ranging from 5 to 35 $, affordable for almost everyone. In Germany, for example, it is "unofficially" expected that every pupil in secondary s...

.Check out the tutorials section here on the website, all targeted at education. Check out Picademy posts. Picademy collected just 713 posts on this forum, very low compared to almost all other topics. The whole education section got about 13,000 posts; camera board got 33,000, media centers 22,000...

Re: Is the RPi "just" an educational tool ?

Any extra money made should be invested in better Raspberry education supporting Pi boards and OSes, not in sponsoring some UK schools / events - anybody club can do that. You seem to be upset that RPF isn't spending its money in India ? What exactly do you think they spend it on ? PeterO Any money...

Re: Is the RPi "just" an educational tool ?

It is worth noting that the RPF is a charity, who sole purpose, according to its charter, is education. That means that is clearly its primary focus! HOWEVER, selling huge numbers of devices to industry means that educational aim can be paid for, and very well indeed. So to hit the primary target, ...

Re: RPi3 hardware now used in new RX300

How they manage to Net boot is not clear to me: seems to have a 8 MB custom internal SD card. The RPi 3B supports Netbooting: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/pi-3-booting-part-ii-ethernet-all-the-awesome/ Maybe; can't say from reading the tail end of that thread as only snags are reported. RPi3 hardware now used in new RX300

The Raspberry Pi 3B hardware is now used by Ncomputing in their Feb. 2017 device called RX300 used by lower budget schools, colleges and call centers. Re: Raspberry Pi 4 possible h.265 decoder?

USB 3 the must have for future I/O speed? No 1Gbs Lan9514, but there is a USB3 LAN7801 but it has no USB hub. So maybe two USB ports USB3 and USB2? Anything with a Linux driver can be recompiled for ARM. So perhaps a LAN/Hub chip change? Not keen on RJ45 sockets for Lan, they seem so big these days...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 possible h.265 decoder?

Community only takes it so far, little things like H265 support may be a deal breaker for it's use in some projects. Hardkernel/Odroid support: Very very good, the engineers actively work with you to fix any issues you find community: virtually non-existent which is sometimes very frustrating when ...

I was dumb enough to believe that Pi day 2017 would throw up some big new release: either this or a new Jessie with Pixel for PC. Nothing happened. I knew better hardware was already ruled out, now software too. At least keep us posted on what other "urgent" stuff you guys are working so we can und...

Re: What applications come pre-installed of the standard Jes

Notice how till today a GUI media player is missing in Raspbian. Notice how no matter how many unrelated threads you try to inject this topic into, it's always rejected. Caving in to people who go around making a nuisance of themselves only encourages bad behaviour. The way you're going about it is...

Windows 8 seems to run its bloatware ok on 2 cores, one fore the bloat and one for the ware. Windows 10 needs 6 cores just to run the code that checks your licence. :D That, or all that CIA / NSA / GCHQ stuff, combined with Russian and Chinese hacks in the build in security gaps  I have a Huaw...
