Re: wifi carrier lost/acquired sometimes every few seconds

Hopefully closure on this: I relocated the Pi to its 'final' location, where it turns out that the wi-fi reception is greater, and I have not gotten a single "carrier lost" message since then. In parallel to this, another Pi (connected via ethernet) suddenly stopped communicating (since it runs head...

Re: sshfs+fstab does not work

I found a solution: add "delay_connect" to the line in /etc/fstab. The process is supposed to wait for network startup, but apparently it doesn't. It may be related to a problem with stretch: https://discourse.osmc.tv/t/how-to-sshfs-tutorial/77852/11, as I don't have to do this for other machines I ...

sshfs+fstab does not work

I can mount a directory from a Mac (on local network) to my Raspberry Pi using $ sshfs remote_machine:/PATH MOUNTPOINT where I have set up ssh without password. However, when I set up an entry in /etc/fstab: [email protected].168.1.60:/PATH /PATH_TO_MOUNTPOINT fuse.sshfs IdentityFile=/MYID/.ssh/id_rsa,defaul...

Re: wifi carrier lost/acquired sometimes every few seconds

Thanks - that's very helpful. For now I'll try to live with it as-is, but if it brings the machine to its knees, I'll know what my next step will be - and I'll keep this in mind for other SOCs that I own.

Re: wifi carrier lost/acquired sometimes every few seconds

This is what I bought: https://www.newegg.com/p/0Y1-0067-00069 It's listed as a charger/power supply, with current 2.5 A, as for the official Raspberry Pi power supply. If the latter is the only acceptable option, I'd like to know in technical terms why that is so. I am also running a DS18B20 temper...

Re: wifi carrier lost/acquired sometimes every few seconds

Problem not solved. I just exchanged the RPi board for another at Micro Center. I've tried plugging the Edimax dongle into two different USB ports, and each time I get something like this (via journalctl): Jul 27 13:33:57 Fermi3 dhcpcd[358]: wlan0: waiting for carrier Jul 27 13:33:59 Fermi3 dhcpcd[3...

Re: wifi carrier lost/acquired sometimes every few seconds

It appears the problem is a bad USB port. Rebooting the router didn't eliminate the problem. I did not try the Edimax with another computer, but I did move it to a different port on the Pi, and it's been close to 24 hours without a glitch.

Re: wifi carrier lost/acquired sometimes every few seconds

I connected it to a 40W Anker power supply - eventually the same problem. It can go for several hours, then get into a mode where the carrier is lost/restored every few minutes - or less.

wifi carrier lost/acquired sometimes every few seconds

I have a Raspberry Pi 3B+ running Stretch, and recently installed an Edimax wifi dongle (and disabled the onboard driver). It worked fine for a while, but lately it has an erratic connection, with journalctl showing the carrier dropped and restored sometimes more than once per minute, but sometimes ...

Re: wifi connection drops, then 'unreachable'

(i'm afraid to say...) Here is what works: 1. Buy an Edimax 7811un wifi USB dongle ($10 at Amazon) 2. Make sure you have a clean OS on the SD card (without attempted fixes to the onboard wifi) 3. Put the onboard driver brcmfmac on the blacklist in /etc/modprobe.d to ensure that it does not load, gra...

Re: emacs 24 crashes under Raspbian stretch

I'm happy to be behind the times. Raspbian buster was announced June 25 - actually in advance of the official Debian date of July 7. My own personal preference, I know, but I normally wait several months (at least) past a major OS release date (Debian, Mac OS, iOS, Windows) to be sure that major bug...

Re: wifi connection drops, then 'unreachable'

I also was running some come intensive numerical calculations yest...

Re: wifi connection drops, then 'unreachable'

I've taken your suggestion and added lines to the shell script and modified the crontab entry so that nothing is thrown away. The RPi ran without trouble overnight. Then, between 8:15 and 8:20 this morning (cron runs every 5 minutes), it broke. Here is the tail of the log file (after I restarted): ....

Addendum: I now have a second line in the wifi.log file that reads ping: sendmsg: Network is unreachable I would think this would also involve a non-zero exit code from ping, which would trigger the wifi restart in the shell script, but I don't get the restart message from the script, and my ssh con...

Re: wifi connection drops, then 'unreachable'

Thanks for the input. I had already implemented the shell script and cron entry that you've described. I can move the RPi closer to the router, but my goal is to have it running a sensor in the house that I cannot move. I don't mind a dropped connection, but it's critical in practice that the RPi be...

wifi connection drops, then 'unreachable'

I have 5 Raspberry Pis running headless, 4 of which have an ethernet connection, while the fifth (Model 3 B+ with stretch OS) must run wifi as it is not near an ethernet port. Re: emacs 24 crashes under Raspbian stretch

I just installed the tightvnc server (automatically removing the realvnc server in the process), keeping the realvnc viewer interface. I was able to load emacs 24, and it does not crash with mouse movement. It's interesting that the one running process I can identify with tightvnc is Xtightvnc. So t...
