My touchscreen is working quite reasonably, even within the corners (though I have to press a little harder I believe). I've used the "matrix" as explained above. You can use dbus commands. Ah! That seems the way to go indeed! I should've started searching at the root, sorry (I now see that the OMXPlayer Github page has D-Bus in the readme).
