Re: Serial via the GPIO

just one thing you don't 'telnet' across the serial link, the cisco device will output directly to the console port, it will give you a prompt if you have login enabled or just let you in. Yep. That was a bad way to phrase it. I normally use putty which is what I use for ssh and telnet. I suppose I...

Re: Serial via the GPIO

I've got a less than favorable opinion of USB -> Serial adapters when used for long term use. They seem to flake out. I've got several of them. I know I could use them. I was hoping to take advantage of the GPIO and get a real serial port.

Re: Serial via the GPIO

I have never heard of a converter that does not need power. Neither of those pages tell me if it is 5V or 3V3. The adapter must produce 3V3 signals only. That's why I was asking. It appears they both have a connector for power, ground, TXD, and RXD. One of them is showing a MAX 3232 chip which is w...

Serial via the GPIO

I want to use my PIs to connect to some of the Cisco devices on my network at home. From what I've been readingI should be able to take an adapter that works w/ TTL and go to RS232. A couple of devices I've found on Ebay are http://www.ebay.com/itm/150760914459?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984...

Re: RS cases - cheapest?

I just got my builttospec case today. It's a very nice looking case and the light pipes are a good touch. Way better than the junk 3D printed case I tried.

Have you checked space on your card? I had similar errors when I installed Wheezy and did update, upgrade, and rpi-update.

I'm running this USB Hub. It works to power my Pi and I've had an external TB hdd connected at the same time as the Pi, kbd, and mouse. Never had an issue w/ the USB on either of my Pis.

Re: Startx giving a blank screen

I had this problem w/ a new install of Wheezy on a 2GB SD card. I had done apt-get update, upgrade, and then rpi-update (w/ the stuff to make it work.) After I got done I could do sudo startx, but startx stopped at a black screen like you're talking about. I resized my partition to fill the 8 GB car...

Re: Ordered one of the 3d printed cases off of Ebay

I wasn't impressed. Had to slightly correct a problem w/ the port for the SD card w/ a sharp knife where it had sagged during printing. I understand things don't always go right, but the quality of this case was low to have shipped. Oh well, you live and learn. It's a relatively cheap lesson. I thin...

Re: Ordered one of the 3d printed cases off of Ebay

I've thought about it, but with the cost of shipping it's probably not worth it. Its tight enough I am concerned I would break my pi fitting it e a dremel. It's an interesting 3d printer sample but rotten pi case.

Re: Help test the next Debian image (wheezy)

I have another thread going about the issue, but I found the answer in this one. I had a problem where I couldn't start X after doing rpi-update w/o sudo. It would hang at a black screen. I installed it on a 2GB SD card. Resizing the card fixed the issue.

I fixed it. This is what clued me in http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=8071&p=122138&hilit=wheezy#p122138 Wheezy is a bit marginal on a 2G card by my reckoning. I tried it on a 2G card yesterday, and the card filled up and caused a panic after a clean install, full update and at...

I tried it again today. Used my other Pi. Imaged a different card. updated/upgraded. Verified I could get into X. From X I installed git and then rpi-update via sudo this time. Still fails on startx. Works w/ sudo startx.

Re: Black screen after startx Wheezy

I've been thinking about what happened here this morning. I think where I got in trouble is when I ran rpi-update. I was in X at the time and ran it in a root terminal windows instead of w/ sudo in a regular window. I'm guessing something ended up owned by root instead of pi. I'll have to check the ...

Black screen after startx Wheezy

I got my 2nd Pi today. Checked it w/ my card that has Squeeze. it worked. Loaded a 2nd card w/ Wheezy. It booted and ran fine. X worked fine. I did (sudo) apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, and the process to run rpi-update. X was running fine until I did rpi-update. After that I get a black screen an...

Re: RS delivery to the USA (DHL)

Cool. I've been reading the horror stories of people w/ huge customs bills when their Pi was delivered. My understanding was that here in the US the Pi should not have customs due, but I wasn't sure. Looks like I might get lucky and have it this week! That'll give me a pair of them to play with.

RS delivery to the USA (DHL)

I just got my shipping notification today for my Pi I ordered from RS. It shows it shipped from the UK via DHL. Anyone here know what it's liable to have for customs fees when it shows up? Will it show in the tracking if I watch it?

Might as well answer my own post now that I have an answer. I didn't expect any problems, but I'd seen a few posts where it was asked if someone was using a PoE switch. I've got mine hooked up and none of the magic smoke has come out.

Connecting a Pi to a Cisco 3550 PWR switch

I'm waiting for my Pi to ship. Like most of us I've been getting the peripherals (case/USB Hub/Kbd/Mouse/SD Card) while I'm waiting. The switch I'm currently using in my test area is a Cisco 3550 PWR. It supports 802.3af PoE. I've never had any problems w/ other devices if they don't support PoE, bu...

Re: Mounting a Proxy Server with R.Pi ?

My solution if I want more than one port is something like this http://routerboard.com/RB250GS I'm running a pfSense box that has one onboard NIC. With vlans the RB250GS gives me the equivalent of 4 NICS. I know I'm not going to get full bandwidth out of them, but for internet purposes it doesn't ma...
