Thanks, glad for confirmation. Unfortunately the case is that *my* code is following your advice, but it gets "broken" after using the other library which for whatever reason is trying to do the spidev's job. Is there a less drastic way than reloading the spi module to fix it after GPIO pin 8 is mes...

So meanwhile, I found a workaround:

sudo modprobe -r spi_bcm2708
sudo modprobe spi_bcm2708
…removing, then re-adding, the spidev driver from the kernel seems to fix it.

Any idea why this is necessary?
