As for requiring new firmware, that happens every time we release a new model, because we need to update the firmware to match the new hardware. In the B to B+ case, the changes are fairly minor, hence not a Pi4. Still need changes to firmware though. Every new release provides new firmware which b...

The 3B+ will boot fine from the latest Raspbian Stretch images, which have the updated firmware needed for the new model. But that's the thing - I don't want Raspbian. So I have a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and and Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. My regular model B can boot from images extracted straight onto an SD card, but my model B+ cannot.
