Re: I want to do this, what programming languages and libraries do I need to know?

Now for this project you will also need to read up on the CLI commands, or the bash shell that the kernel uses. With Ruby, you can not just modify the CLI commands, but completely create your own custom commands. def cpu0_temp a = proc{`cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp'.chomp} b =proc{ a.ca...

Re: I want to do this, what programming languages and libraries do I need to know?

Ruby is the way to go. Although python is similar, I find it more glitchy and buggy than Ruby. Ruby also requires less code to do the same thing. It's easy to use and easy to learn. Python really is over rated, and it's interpreter can be more touchy than Java, c#, etc. Plus Ruby has tons of resourc...

Re: Loop different applications based on GPIO input

in your code, make sure you have a true and false statement. I use ruby but its not far off from python. if pin # == true led_pin == true if pin # == false led_pin == false setting your code up like so will keep any loops from happening and ensures the correct command is ran for the correct input(bu...

Re: List of GPIO libraries

I can give a few thats always overlooked. pi_piper gem: it was a cool little project but no longer works. wish they would of finished it. rpi_gpio gem: simular to the python lib for the pi's gpio, but works with ruby. I highly recommend this gem file. It works with any other language lib used and ca...

Re: A Github question maybe?

Interesting read.... I was about to show off my little app I made for new people to the PI to make git clones easier for them...basically cutting out the user terminal work for it. I was wondering how I could expand on it a bit more in its functionality and I saw this thread. I named it "RuGit" the ...

Re: Ruby, the untouched "Pi'rate Treausure for "Pi"oneers

The Ruby tutorials are up and running, just added the newest one. I have a triple boot setup with raspbian, retropie, and kodi, so this is geared for pi's that have one or all three installed. I'm working in Raspbian in these tutorials, but these scripts can be written and added to the pi from a des...

Re: Let's Play "What Killed My Pi?"...Static? Mains Motor No

Any kind of magnitisum can kill any electrical component in a heartbeat. It sounds to me though it was a combination of all the variables. On your Next Build, run down to the home Depot or Lowe's, and ask for some Radiant Barrier(or shield). It's Aluminum and Milar that is used in all sorts of appli...

Ruby, the untouched "Pi'rate Treausure for "Pi"oneers

In my studies of RPI projects, programs, scripts, and everything in between; I have noticed a huge lack of pure Ruby resources for the Raspberry Pi. Never mind Ruby on Rails, in which a pi would be a great RoR server for RoR people, I'm very surprised that such a wonderful programming language has b...

Re: Battery Powered PI

One last input: In the Electrical trade and field, everything is rated to carry 65% or 80% of your required load. Instance, when wiring a house, how many devices (light fixtures and receptacles) we add to that breaker is measured to ensure that in normal use 65% of the total amp compasity of the bre...

I'm having the same issue. Mine is a Ruby script for quicker OS selection for duel booted systems. if the black screen you are refering to is the command line, all you need to do is type startx and enter.

it will be a black screen with a bunch of white letters with info and you should see this

pi/raspberrypi$

if you see that then when you type startx it will be
pi/raspberrypi$ startx
