Converting Raspbian (Pixel) into Raspbian Lite after installation

Are there a specific set of packages that makeup the difference between Raspbian (Pixel) and Raspbian Lite? I accidentally loaded up the full Raspbian on my SD Card and configured everything exactly how I wanted. It wasn't until I plugged an HDMI cable in to check something that I realized I didn't ...

Re: Cleaning the RPi camera lens

I realize this is an old post but thought I would comment just in case someone else comes across this. Generally you should always use something like canned air before you try to wipe the lens with anything. That way hopefully any abrasive particles will be removed before you wipe the lens with a q-...

@Burngate, thanks for the one meaningful reply.

Everyone else go thread jack all over each other elsewhere.

Pi Zero-W placement for ideal wifi antenna reception

I'm putting the Pi Zero-W in a little handheld case with a 7" LCD. Is there a recommended position (relative to the wifi router it's connecting to) for the board? e.g., Should the antenna side (with the HDMI/USB ports) be up, down, left, or right? Does it matter if I have the back facing forward (to...

Re: cython install hangs

I realize this is an old post but I just wanted to say thanks to @paddyg. I spent days trying to get Cython working on my RPi Zero only to have it lock up (kinda'ish) in weird ways after running for a long time. Never seen a Linux system act this way. Once I read your mention of "adjusting the video...

Re: GUI Menu without X

Thank you Heater. I wasn't aware that was possible, I will take a look into that further.

I'm also currently looking at PyGame as a possibility. Are you at all familiar with that? And if so, does that seem like a good option in your opinion?

Thanks again!

GUI Menu without X

Does anyone know of a library or application that would allow me to display a nice GUI menu to the user? I don't want it to rely on X at all (Raspbian Lite OS). Bonus points if it supports touch-screen, inputs (toggle switches and text input for "Settings") and neato transition effects. I simply wan...

Half-full thermometer indicator

I'm running the latest Raspbian Jessie Lite. When I run a Python script of mine (which spawns 4 processes, that run continuously, if that matters), I see the half-full thermometer icon on my screen. From my understanding, that should pop up when the Pi hits 80(celsius). I run the following command a...

5" LCD with good viewing angle

Hello, subject says it all pretty much. I'm wondering if someone can recommend a good 5" (give or take) LCD that can be viewed at an angle. I currently have a cheap XPT2046 I got from a Chinese seller from E-Bay. It looks surprisingly good ( not great, but for the price... ) when I'm facing it direc...

Re: Wifi performance quite dropped

I just wanted to followup about the issue I described above, all of my locale / wifi issues do seem to be mostly resolved. There were no additional updates, but I use this particular Pi for streaming lowres video from the raspicam over wifi and it's now working again like it did before. If your prob...

Re: Wifi performance quite dropped

I am in the midst of the same issue you described, only with a Pi Zero. Incredibly slow wifi! I'm not sure why this happened, I haven't ran updates on this Pi in quite some time. I'm running the updates to try to fix these problems I began having today. One thing I noticed, calling locale generates ...

Re: Moving Linux kernel to 4.9

D'oh, me again, now I'm having the same problem on my Pi3. The problem is I did a apt-get update/dist-upgrade and it downgraded the kernel. Then rpi-update still thinks it's updated to 4.9 (which I guess it's not) so rpi-update isn't allowing it reinstall: [email protected]:~ $ sudo apt-get dist-upgra...

Re: How to ping a device in python?

I realize this is an old thread, but just thought I would contribute a little. @Nander: Doing string checks (the word "received" in your example) is always a concern for me. I worry that 'ping' might have different language variants that will cause it to break on other systems. Also when I run your ...
