Re: Powered USB hub

I have serious concerns about my bank balance, so there has to be a compromise somewhere. If Im spending more than £40 then I may as well buy a new drive

Re: Powered USB hub

aha, but on a 7 port hub I would be using at most 4 ports for drives. Or I may just rearrange everything and use some powered 3.5inch drives with the pi and keep the 2.5inch drives for backups.

Powered USB hub

Hello, I'm considering plugging 2-4 usb hard drives and SSDs into a pi 4. Apart from the obvious that there are only 2 usb 3.0 ports, I assume I would be wise to use a powered hub for that many drives? How many drives could a Pi 4 support without a powered hub? And can anyone recommend a reasonably ...

Re: fans fans fans

not really customised, just got given some extra ram so bunged it in.
the idea is to build something that measures temp and controls the fans. could build a thermal regulator circuit if I buy parts, but since I havea spare zero W floating about I thought I may as well use it.

Re: fans fans fans

its a laptop case, absolutely fine in winter, occasionally overheats in summer. Gets hot because I have 12gb ram in a laptop designed to carry 8gb - but thats my choice.
I currently have a desk fan aimed at it that I can turn on when it gets toasty. Hoping to build a cooling bed for it.

Re: fans fans fans

If I wanted to take it out I would. If I wanted to pay money then that would be up to me.
I'm asking whats possible, not what you think is sensible.

Re: fans fans fans

its a powered hub that feeds devices into the PC usb. The plan is to use the fans to help cool the PC which has far too much ram in it and needs additional cooling. Only thinking about the zero since I have one and I know it can do PWM. I think the powered hub can provide 2A, so maybe some added pow...

fans fans fans

Hello,
If I run a Pi Zero W off a plug in USB hub which is also connected to a PC, is there likely to be enough power to run 3x 5v brushless fans scavenged from an old laptop?
Also, can anyone point me in the right direction for some instructions on how to do PWM stuff through the gpio?

thanks

elected to go with a script in the end so I can avoid overnight and weekends and alter the timings easier without going into cron. Cheers though, your line pointed me in the right direction #!/bin/bash StartTimeHour=8 FinishTimeHour=16 H="$(date +%H)" D="$(date +%a)" if [ "$D" = "Sat" -o "$D" = "Sun...

Cron Jobs @reboot between certain hours

Hello,

Is it possible to set a cron job to play a video using omx when a pi 3 reboots, but only between 8am and 4pm? ie, if it reboots out of these times, say at midnight, the video will NOT run.

thanks

Re: Temp sensor for Water Tank

Only considering the 5 steel ones as its a fairly good deal and I can then use them for other places, like in a fridge with condensation and outdoors in rain. I can always strip them apart if needs be.

Not going to daisy chain, just use one on the tank.

Re: Temp sensor for Water Tank

Agree with the thermowell idea. But don't have one and don't want to drill the tank to put one in cause I know the bugger would never seal. There is one in the immersion heater but that's for the main tank thermostat which needs to stay. I might see if there's enough space alongside it but not optim...

Re: Temp sensor for Water Tank

from the pictures I can see, its a metal tube case with a bit of neoprene shrinkwrap around the join between the wire and the case. I would hope theres an o-ring seal inside there otherwise theres no chance it will remain waterproof when heated and cooled

Re: Temp sensor for Water Tank

waterproof to a point. theres a seal in there somewhere, and any seal thats continually temperature cycled will eventually fail. However, Ive just found 5 of them for £10 on amazon, so I may get those and use them elsewhere too. They would be fine outside I expect in the rain, and probably ok in the...

Re: Temp sensor for Water Tank

Hmmm... theoretically the DS18B20 is waterproof, so it could be dangled inside the tank. However I wonder how long it would last under water with regular heating and cold water flooding when the tank refills. Something similar on the outside that doesnt need to be waterproof might work. There are no...

Temp sensor for Water Tank

I would like to add a temperature sensor to measure the water temperature, probably by mounting the sensor against the copper tank where the water exits, and adjusting for the di...
