Solder to back of USB port?

Has anyone tried just connecting the red (+5V) and black (ground) on a USB connector to get power only? Also, has anyone tried doing this by soldering directly to the back pins on a USB port to save on physical space? I'm trying to do this on a ZERO4U usb hub.

Thanks in advance :)
