I could've told you that, I had the same problem on my Fedora x86 setup I think it's a GTK3 or GNOME 3 issue

Personally, I would pick a distro with more root access prevention (so you don't foul it up too badly)
and install it to a usb stick or something

As an avid linux user, I have tried almost every linux distro under the sun.
the one i'd recommend is ubuntu, i'd suggest installing GNU/Grub to the SD Card (Bootloader) and then booting from an external hard drive (at least 80GiB)
