Solved. I got it to work with this answer from Edimax support: The EW-7811UTC cannot detect all frequencies. If your router is using a channel which is not supported the adapter will not detect it. Mr EngMan,

Do you have any suggestion why my 5GHz SSID from my ASUS RT68U(Merlin) won't show up for the 7811UTC in Openelec 6.0.3 on my RPi3?
It's strange because other 5GHz SSID's from neighbours and my chromecasts do show.
Connecting to my 2.4 GHz SSID from the same router works fine.
