LibVlc python bindings with hardware acceleration

I've installed Vlc with hardware acceleration and it works like a charm. I was wondering if anyone got this to work with the libvlc python bindings?
When starting vlc from command line the right output is selected but when i try to instantiate from libvlc using 'vlc.Instance("--vout=omxil_vout")' it just uses the default output
