Re: Pi4 boot from USB via SD boot folder

Thanks Gents. It's becoming an interesting topic. @RonR: yes. my UIDs are the same, as I etched the USB SSD, and copied /boot to the SSD. That's a confusing statement. You should have used Etcher to write the image to the SSD, and then copied the files on the SSD "boot" partition to a FAT32 formatte...

Re: Pi4 boot from USB via SD boot folder

Well, I etched the USB drive and copied the boot partition to the SD card as outlined in my original post.

Welcome to the Linux world, where there is no straight answer... as it seems.

What do I need to do, after step 1 to 4 to make this work?

Re: Pi4 boot from USB via SD boot folder

I appreciate the input, but I am after the steps required to complete the path I have chosen. I had an SD card and 'etched' Buster lite onto it, and followed two guides, but neither one ended up with the desired outcome. The post I am following was from @HawaiianPi, who also replied first to your po...

Pi4 boot from USB via SD boot folder

I saw this post https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=243610&start=50#p1498774 which in essence says this: Simple version of hybrid SD-USB boot tutorial: Write Raspbian image to USB drive with Etcher. Re: Stretch: extend partition and file system w/o loosing data

gparted is a graphical interface (GUI).

Edited my post, and added "headless" rPi.
Hence, some command line tools have to do the trick.
Would appreciate, based on the data provided (and am happy to provide more if required), an idea on how to perform the necessary commands.

Stretch: extend partition and file system w/o loosing data

I have set-up a headless rPi3+ with Stretch Lite; burned the image with Ether to a 16GB SD card; extended the partition to 16GB. USed Etcher to grapb this image and burned it to a 240GB SSD. What do I need to do to use the entire SSD? More so, without loosing the data on it if possible). df -h Files...

Re: Copy SD card to SDD? Etcher?

Thanks...
What I ended up doing, (for the benefit of others)...

Used DiskImager on Windows to read the SD card to an image, and then wrote this image to the SSD.
Plug SSD into rPi3B+... all working!

Happy New Year :)

Re: Copy SD card to SDD? Etcher?

Well, had to search a bit for the copier... and found it here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/anothe ... -raspbian/

However, I only have Stretch Lite installations, and the copier is part of the desktop so it seems.

Maybe I try option b) of my initial post and see what happens. :)

Copy SD card to SDD? Etcher?

I have set-up a rPi 3 installed and configured some software on it. I now want to use this set-up on a rPi3B+ with a SSD. I have checked that the 3B+ accepts the SSD by using Etcher to put Stretch on the SSD, and connecting the SSD to the rPi3B+ and it boots of it. I now want to copy the SD card to ...

Re: [Solved] Pi 3 not booting from USB SSD

Once an issue is solved (closed), it is better to create a new post... in particular when the issue a different one.

However, my answer to your question is:

I have cloned my SD card to USB with rpi clone.
It is easy to use, works spot on!
Give it a shot: https://github.com/billw2/rpi-clone

Re: Pi 3 not booting from USB SSD

Thank you... the links helped. I tried bootcode.bin on an empty SD card; did not work. Added a timeout (just an empty) file; no change (did not work). Reading through the links, and I realised the SSD start-up is the culprit. Plugged a powered USB hub into the Pi3. Connected the SSD to the USB. Fire...

[Solved] Pi 3 not booting from USB SSD

The OTP is set, the Pi 3 boots from a USB stick, all working fine. I have cloned the USB stick to a 64 GB drive with a SATA adaptor with split USB/power connectors. The Pi does not even blink after it would usually boot from the stick. Bought a WD green 240GB and Onrico enclosure. It has a USB3 conn...

Re: rPi3 on USB drive: What is constantly accessing the drive?

Have installed iotop and atop and found the process causing it.

It was daemontools looking for a service I had yet not created; I had created the directory, but not he run file; it seems it was looking for it, and thinking to long what to do next. :)

Anyway... problem solved.

[Solved] rPi3 on USB drive: What is constantly accessing the drive?

I made a rPi3 bootable from USB drive... all good... it runs Stretch. The image is stock standard; with my user added to dialout for serial access. I have written a python script to read from the serial port and write to disk every second. This will create a short blib on the USB drive for the write...

[Solved] Changed ISPs, changed DNS servers in dnsmasq: no longer resolving

I am running a Pi on Jessi v8 It runs dnsmasq, DHCP and Squid proxy; and was running fine, until this afternoon. I changed ISPs. The services works, and was tested with a Windows 10 PC with manually configured IP v4 using the new ISPs DNS server. However, the rPi stopped resolving domain names; whic...

Re: dnsmasq problem after upgrading wheezy to jessie

I am using the isc-DHCP service; and later required a DNS proxy, when I installed dnsmasq. IT was working fine, until I made the upgrade from Wheezy to Jessie. :?
Have googled this problem, but can't find a solution.

Thanks for trying... port 22 is open... adding the empty file 'ssh' works, as I have proven on another rPi.
It must be something else.

rPi3 fresh install, no ssh connection via wired Ethernet

Pulled a fresh rPi3 out of the cupboard and installed JessieLight (2017) on it. Added the file 'ssh' to the root of the sd card to enable the by default disabled ssh; put the SD into the Pi, network cable and power; red LED on, green blinking... rPi3 acquired IP address via DHCP; I can ping it, nmap...
