Re: Idiot's guide to installing software?

OK, I put Raspbian on a fresh SD card, and Focuswriter works just fine.

Thanks for the replies folks!

Re: Idiot's guide to installing software?

Righto. So I take it 'wheezy' and 'squeeze' are different enough that I'd need the former? I managed to get my initial boot up and running, so I'll try another SD card with another install on it and see what happens. Trial and error, and plenty of persistence... sigh. Thanks folks. 8-)

Re: Idiot's guide to installing software?

I'll try, but I don't know what that is or where to find it... yup, I'm that noob. EDIT: found the file, it lists a couple of ftp sites but points to debain squeeze - so I'm guessing I have the wrong debian to install focuswriter? I'm finding this all a little impenetrable. I used to be able ...

Re: Idiot's guide to installing software?

Hmm, it doesn't work. Firstly, entering "sudo apt-get update" gives me a whole load of stuff and finished with some error report saying "duplicate sources, you may want to run sudo apt-get to correct this" and then, entering "sudo apt-get install focuswriter" just gives me a few lines that look like...

Thanks, I'll try that. Definitely Debian here though. I'll report back!

Idiot's guide to installing software? (solved)

I don't seem to be having any luck either trying to install something, or finding out how to - as a total beginner with Linux and its command line, I have really very little idea what I'm doing and am struggling to find the right information. Basically, I want to put Focuswiter onto my Pi. I've trie...

Re: The VIC 314 PI in a C64

Interesting - what have you got the keyboard matrix hooked up to? I've thought about making something similar using an old Cherry board and a console case, or even an old terminal board (plenty of space in those) but adapting some of these old things to USB is the hurdle.

Re: Hi 8 Video Cassette Case

Great minds think alike - I tried audio cassette cases but they're too small.

I think that's the best I've seen so far. Still wondering what to do for mine. Nice work.

Re: 80's computer book.

I still have my complete (bound) INPUT magazines! And Sinclair Users, and Sinclair Programs, C&VG, Your Computer, etc, etc... and a few few books. I particularly enjoyed typing stuff in from some Usborne text adventure books, one being a "how to" and the others listings with maps and hints. Good tim...

Re: Switching video modes

Excellent, cheers for that. Just before I saw your reply, I was playing with the command line and managed to create a config.txt using echo -e "hdmi_group=1\nhdmi_mode=X" > config.txt where X is, in my case, 4, but represents a choice from whatever's available in the list given by /opt/vc/bin/tvserv...

Switching video modes

I'm using my Pi with a TV over HDMI, and the Pi is running Debian. I've been able to create a config.txt file (on my other computer) that sets the display mode, but don't seem able to make changes to it on the Pi itself. I can use the terminal to check the available CEA and DMT modes, and check the ...

Re: Power Option

I've also found the Belkin Universal USB Wall Charger works - the model number on the charger itself is F8Z222uk (white unit with single USB connector) and the box is labelled F8Z563UK. I bought it in May 2012, at KRCS, for £9.99. The spec is 5V @1A. A USB cable is not included. I bought a Lindy 1m ...
