Using the Pi Camera to measure objects

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone out there has code that would allow me to use the Raspberry Pi camera (or usb etc) to measure the size of an object? I'm looking to measure various objects of differing sizes but within uniform boundaries - think dvd cases - there are various sized ones but they are all b...

Re: 2.8" TFT + Touch Shield Board v1b/c

Hi Texy!

Any idea when you're getting more in stock?
My existing one is still working (even though I've managed to knock one of the tiny components off between the shield and the screen... I don't know how!)

I'm after a new one, with ribbon cable etc.

Thanks,

Jeff

I have an original TFT Screen and case.
The dimensions are:

Re: 2.8" TFT + Touch Shield Board v1b

Well done, looks good.
We all have to start somewhere.
The nice thing about the Pi is that it drives us to learn and try.

Looking forward to more, good luck with the squeezeplug idea.

Re: 2.8" TFT + Touch Shield Board

Strange.
That is controlled in X by the file:

Code: Select all

/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

Code: Select all

DISPLAY=:0 xinput --set-prop 'ADS7846 Touchscreen' 'Evdev Axis Inversion' 0 1
If it is saved there, unless overwritten, it should stay the same.

Re: 2.8" TFT + Touch Shield Board

Great.

The maximum resolution is 320x240.
There's only so many pixels available on this tiny screen at this price.

Re: 2.8" TFT + Touch Shield Board

If I get time I'll go over my setup and see if I can remember it.
I know I used the instructions from notoro, the driver writer instead.

Re: 2.8" TFT + Touch Shield Board

Ah, I see.
It is most likely the X11 config:

Code: Select all

DISPLAY=:0 xinput --set-prop 'ADS7846 Touchscreen' 'Evdev Axis Inversion' 0 1
Try setting that again before you wipe everything and start again.

Re: 2.8" TFT + Touch Shield Board

Is everything fully inverted? (Console displaying upside down?)
BTW - I use mine with the headphone and composite jack as the "bottom" of the screen

See the camera mount in action in my latest video showing off the new changes I've made to the UI.
The tripod mount can be seen in the background in front of my Pi Server

Re: dropped frames

I'm out and about, so can't quickly find information, but does anyone know the default bit rate with raspivid?
I have the printed pdf to hand but it doesn't really mention defaults.

Thanks,

I have one of these additions to my Pi, TFT, TFT case and it is great. Everything enclosed in the footprint of the TFT screen case. Re: 2.8" TFT + Touch Shield Board v1b

Nice addition!
Very handy for the others things you might want connected as well as the TFT.
And being able to use on a ribbon cable... NICE!
I'm not much of a crafting type but that will make adding to other cases so much easier!

Hmmm...do I need another one...

Re: dropped frames

I always use the "-n" option when taking videos like the one seen above. (because the small TFT doesn't support live preview very well, no point in trying) I get very nice preview on the 2.8" TFT from TEXY with tftfb and fbcopy. What problems do you see? I just remembered a problem I've had - using...

Re: 2.8" TFT + Touch Shield Board

I've been busy changing the UI to use fbcp to allow you to see the preview output on screen.
Certainly a little more tricky than my simple click buttons interface.
(still too much flicker for me as fbcp and python fight for the screen at times :-) )

Re: 2.8" TFT + Touch Shield Board

Looks good.
I guess with the camera mount I can use any size spacers to make it all a little bit smaller, depth-wise.

But looks good.
Only just got myself a new tripod so I might have to get both.
Rough prices?

Patriot LX Series 16GB SDHC Class 10 Sd card: PSF16GSDHC10-pc
I've seen some good and some bad reviews - most of the bad center around being bad for small writes.

Re: dropped frames

Useful info.
The card I have is 16GB, and only 30% used.

I have maybe used about 40% of it in total before deletes.
What you suggest is possible, but I don't have any fresh cards to test with at the moment. (and I can't take the time wiping this one etc.)

Thank you though, if I get a chance I will!

Re: what settings for low light?

I'm using 3.6.11+ from Notoro (TFT screen build)
But holding bootloader updates everything else is up to date.
How do you find out the specific version of raspistill?
(raspistill -v) gives me "raspistill Camera App v1.2"

Re: what settings for low light?

I've just taken 4 pictures, 2 in good office light, 2 in the dim conditions under my desk ;-) and all 4 come back with:
32929/1000000.
All using the exposure setting of "verylong"

Code: Select all

raspistill -ISO 800 -ex verylong -t 2000 -n -o FILENAME
Same results using "night" exposure settings too. BTW.
